Anyone know of a free theme or close enough theme that can be modded to something similar to this design: http://www.instructables.com/ ?

nothing I have found thats free, a couple paid ones yes

You might be able to cobble together a few plugins to get something similar..possibly use a classifieds plugin for many of the features, but I think in the end its going to lead to a pretty heavily modded theme no matter what you start with..free or paid.

I could do something similiar to this though
