I need help with my football bets!!

Alright so I made a bet with a friend for the remainder of the football season. We each start this weekend with $110 in a betting account and whomever runs out of money first loses. Prior to the playoffs we have to bet the entirety of our account each week up to $500... meaning that if I have $650 in my account going into next week I have to bet at least $500 of it. If we both make it to the playoffs then the rules change and we can bet as little or as much as we like heading into the Super Bowl. If neither of us lose all our money then whomever has the most money after the Super Bowl is the winner.

I'm familiar with football as a sport but not so much with how well individual teams are doing. I've done a little bit of football betting for fun with my friends but always just wagers with and without the spread, so I don't know all the other betting options that exist.

So I need help! Tell me what to bid on this weekend! Who here makes money on football betting every season? Who knows their shit?

ALL YOU EVER NEED TO KNOW:
(ready? Write this down now...)
NEVER ever bet on The Jets.

Should help you.

Find out where the game is being played, also find out what time the game is being played and bet on the weather, for instance, I'd back the team that had the sun in their eyes less, same goes with the wind, find out what pressures are where and bet for the team with the wind backing them the most.

No idea how American football is played, but think smart if both teams are equal on paper.

Alright, so far I've got:

1. I need Boneprone to give me some pointers.
2. Don't bet on the Jets.
3. Check the weather and bet accordingly when teams are well matched.

What else??

DET
DAL

Where are you planning to place your bets? I've setup a special GFY Promo code for GFYers to bet with Sports.com at http://www.gfybets.com :winkwink:

As for how to bet on spreads, football isn't a game of much parity like, say, hockey. The top teams will rarely get upset and the bottom-feeders can go a full season with only 1-2 wins. Just see if they are always blown out or if they lose competitively and based on that you should bet accordingly with the spreads.

ie. say DET always loses by an average of 14 points but the spread on them versus a good team is -6.5 (7 points), you would bet against them. If they ha dbeen losing games by only a few points though, there is a good chance they will cover the spread even if you don't think they can win the game, so go with the underdog.

You can also hedge your bets of course, but that's another whole strategy to explain :)

Good luck!

No, I'm definitely going to do my own but I was thinking it might be fun to pick one or two bets that someone here tells me to do. Do you do straight wagers or parlays or what?

Thanks... and Good Luck back atcha! :thumbsup

I have an account with sportsbetting that I've used for years. Having placed my own bets and watched my friends, it doesn't seem that the best teams always win and vice-versa. I see people get completely upset all the time. And when I've done bets that my football obsessed friends laugh at me for... I've often won. :)

We'll see how it goes!

Last call for betting advice for my first week!!

Mickey_ 11-01-2009 09:57 AM

That's easy.
Replace 'football' with 'soccer' and put all your money on our team. :pimp
