pretty scummy way of writing up the contract by 24 Hour Fitness

they have a pretty scummy way of wording things imho

Quote:

If you decide to cancel your membership, you will not be billed for more than thirty (30) days via EFT
(electronic funds transfer) after you notify 24 Hour Fitness via email, U.S. mail or by calling or visiting any club. After the period
covered by your last EFT payment, your prepaid last month dues will be applied. Your membership will end 30 days after the
period covered by your last EFT payment. In addition, your agreement may be terminated in accordance with Section 6 on
page 4.

so if you read that fine print quickly you might assume that all is cool and you give them 30 days notice and you are fine, but the way it is worded and the way they apply it, is when you give them notice, they will take the funds for 30 more days from your card, and then your prepaid last month starts, which imho is a pretty sneaky way to get 60 days from people when at first glance it looks like 30 days notice is what they are asking..... I bet they get a TON of people hooked for an extra month with that wording

you'd need fake ID too then because they make you show your drivers license with the member card to get in

LiveDose 10-26-2009 07:28 PM

It's too bad that most gyms are operated so shitty that they have to lock people into contracts.

DBS.US 10-26-2009 08:17 PM

Sure just take it out of my Pre-paid Visa with a $0 balance

All gym memberships are shady. They know in general we are fat lazy mother fuckers who will quit going after a couple days/weeks/months. In conclusion I blame it on Obama and the tubes.

I just pay one time about $289 for a year or so up front and be done with it. My gym is privately owned and walking distance from my house and run by good people.

tiger 10-27-2009 12:35 AM

They suck fuck them.

But regardless, gyms are hurting you can pretty much negotiate any terms you want with them.

Raf1 10-27-2009 12:45 AM

luckily I go to a privately owned gym where I pay cash and the owner is one of the instructors.

fatfoo 10-27-2009 02:29 AM

Yeah, scummy indeed.

Nothing beats a home gym, where I can work out whenever I want during the day, without leaving home.

No wonder that dude went postal at 24h Fitness.

I worked for 24 hour fitness for over 7 years.... They are sneaky ass people. Not only are they sneaky with there contacts they screw over their employee's too. Every 6 months they would change our pay (I was a personal trainer) so we could not understand what we were getting. They serouisly made it as confusing as possible so you really could understand or figure out how we got paid unless you spent all day working on it.

The company really went down hill when the sold out for millions of dollars to investors. That is when I decided to say "see ya later"

I do have to say this, They are smart and they are sneaky and they know how to make $$$$.

Tom_PM 10-27-2009 09:43 AM

When I was younger we lived near a nice university. They had a world class gym. All you had to know was where it was. These days I dunno if you are allowed to roam freely on universitys' grounds.. but if you are, then there ya go. Free gym could be closer than you think.

Porn Grounds 10-27-2009 11:08 AM

They explained that to me fully when I signed up. I didn't see it as a problem at all.

JustDaveXxx 10-27-2009 11:33 AM

I worked at Ballys when i was 18 and saw all of that shady shit. I still think pay sites are worse.lol

If you ever by a gym membership, ask for a "paid in full" It is a one time lump sum between the pice of $520- $700 depending on the week. The prices do go up and down so keep asking about the prices.

I got mine for $600 and i got 3 years with a $50 yearly renewal for life after my 1st initial 3 years. I have had my 24 hours membership for 10 years already. and had my Ballys with a $15 yearly renewal for 18 years.

With both memberships i have access to all of their clubs across the US.

At the end of the day if you know whats going on with gym memberships you can really save a shitload by pre paying in full.:2 cents:

cancel the payment order with your bank.

if they butch about it tell them to take you to court.

in europe this works pretty well (no jdge would ever decide in their favor and they never go to court)

Last two gyms I was enrolled in I stoped paying the day I left, if you think about it there's no rationale reason why they need a 30 days warning. Imagine if you would ask this from surfers to stop rebilling.

shimmy2 10-27-2009 12:01 PM

i think the postal guy went to LA fitness, where me and all the other FL webmasters go. i dumped ballys in favor of them, just cause its closer and the facilities are better. people steal your shit in ballys and tend to break into cars more frequently there. i've always found 24hr fitnesse's to be nice but they are too busy, i dont like waiting in a line to use a treadmill

I think I read somewhere that they have some kind of pending class action lawsuit going on in the courts, or maybe it is over already, not sure

only in America there are contracts written up to tie you up in recurring payments which are hard to get off from, then scruw up your credit because you refused to pay for it, and ther're still charging you, while the CC card is charging for monthly fees..do I need to say more? :pimp

yeah, there appears to be no shame of the people running some corporations in being seen as being shifty and misleading to scam a buck... fuckers

The Porn Nerd 10-27-2009 08:19 PM

The 24/7 Fitness here in NYC got bought out by some other gym and it's no longer 24/7 - not that I felt the need (much) to pump iron at three am. Heh. Pump OTHER things at three am, sure...

because they operate the same way as porn membership sites.... on the fact that most people signup and don't use it. So once they get you in, they know most people would come 1 or 2 times and then quit, so instead of paying for 1 or 2 days access, once they get your card they try to ding it for as much as they can before you are gone.

Would be funny if everyone with a gym membership showed up at the same time, you knw they sell 1000's of memberships when they could probably only hold a couple hundred people at most at any given time.
