Seagate Resurrection line is the best

area51 - BANNED FOR LIFE 10-26-2009 05:53 AM

Don't but Seagate/Maxtor.

Get a Western Digital.

fris 10-26-2009 05:58 AM

ya looking at either

Western Digital 2 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 32 MB Cache $199

or

Western Digital 2 TB RE4-GP SATA Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Enterprise Hard Drive WD2002FYPS $299

Slick 10-26-2009 06:48 AM

Western Digital is the way to go, never had any problems with them, however, I did once with a Seagate :(

What Fris said ;)

Klen 10-26-2009 06:58 AM

Western Digital, taking seagate is huge risk.

fris 10-26-2009 07:31 AM

ya my current drive is making noise, i ran seatools and failed on a short test, I guess I should replace it soon (today) since its my drive my os is on

Raf1 10-26-2009 07:34 AM

mine is 500GB. Never tried the big ones :)

LiveDose 10-26-2009 08:55 AM

I've had good and bad luck with almost every brand. I wish there was a truly reliable brand.

l0lf4c3 10-26-2009 08:56 AM

vote for WD here

dready 10-26-2009 10:10 AM

WD here too. Seagate, you better have a good backup. Although with 1TB, you better have a good backup regardless.

Same here no problems on two of my WD drives.

Seagate ran slow and problems then finally died, they have been having problems ever since they moved their production into a different country. Forgot where I read this but lots of drive errors and DOA drives:2 cents:

Naechy 10-26-2009 10:15 AM

Soo big for me, but is great to have 1TB storage

ProG 10-26-2009 10:15 AM

odd... every single WD I've owned has died and every single Seagate is still kicking :upsidedow WD seems to last just under 2 years, the Velociraptor about 1 1/2 years. I had a head crash on my last Velociraptor. I think a 1TB drive is unreliable regardless of brand...

bloggerz 10-26-2009 10:21 AM

Western Digital or use your servers online :)

Quagmire 10-26-2009 10:47 AM

Hitachi FTW

Elli 10-26-2009 11:12 AM

I picked up 4 1TB WD Black editions and have had no problems. Before I load them up with anything, I always run a full error check and they've come up clean every time. Back in the summer I picked up two 1TB Seagates because they were on sale and both BRAND NEW were filled with bad sectors, so I returned them within a week.

CYF 10-26-2009 11:22 AM

+1 for WD Black

Buzz_Aziani 10-26-2009 11:23 AM

themadwriter 10-26-2009 01:07 PM

i have used a variety of brands WD, Seagate, Samsung etc..

I would have to say WD has been the most reliable

Hotrocket 10-26-2009 02:04 PM

I've had my Seagate external running for about 2 years now without a hitch, zero noise, not a complaint about em and will be buying a 2nd external in the next few weeks.

HookUPcom 10-26-2009 04:01 PM

Just bought one for my wife at Best Buy for $109 this weekend.

I have 2 WD now, 1tb and 500gb, both holding up fine!

Same here. Never tried the big ones.

bronco67 10-26-2009 04:29 PM

Just to give Seagate some needed love...I have all Seagate in my server and 5 systems, all 1 TB, and they all have worked fine for quite some time.

There's no difference in reliability between Seagate and WD.

WD recently released the 2TB Black and 2TB RE4 (not RE4-GP) drives... if you hunt around you might be able to find these somewhere. Both are 7200RPM whereas the Green/RE4-GP ones are 5400RPM. The newer models also have some extra features such as a dual head seek mechanism: this does a coarse seek like a normal drive, then an additional fine seek which can move faster than a full head servo mechanism can.

I have several drives so I keep a few spares. Rather than leaving them in their factory packaging until they're needed I open them and give them a good thrashing for at least 7 days. :) My test program reads and writes random bits of data to give the platter surface and head subsystem a good workout.

Some say that infant mortality is a myth but I've had a few drives die within a week. Given the typical expected lifetime of a HD I don't think that 7 days of heavy testing is going to hurt, and if it picks up an early failure then it's definitely a benefit. :2 cents:

Care to share what s/w you use for this purpose? Sounds like something I'd be interested in :)

You going to change that opinion when they all start to die :D

I think you missed the point... This is a good way to sum it up.

The issue with this question is that there are good drive models for a manufacturer and bad drive models.

For example, there seems to be a high failure rate for the Seagate 1tb & 1.5tb drives, but their 250gb & 320gb drives are solid*. Yet the Western Digital 1tb, 1.5tb, & 2tb drives seem more stable, but there have been issues with their 500gb drives*.

The answers to this question should address more of the good drive models, not the actual manufacturers themselves.

Thanks! JFV

Brand or model really has nothing to do with failure rates. Anyone with 1TB of data they don't want to lose certainly shouldn't be putting their faith in a brand name.

+1

A particular model may fail faster, which just means you lose your data sooner. ALL drives will fail at some point. Backup, backup, backup.

Just added the LaCie D2 Quadra 1 Tb external to my G5, I back up my Final Cut exports on it. For my PC's I use WD or Seagate, and no more than 500 Gb yet. Soon.. but not quite yet.

Vote for WD.

Tanker 10-26-2009 06:07 PM

the bigger the drive the more you lose if it fails grab a couple 500 gig drives

HomerSimpson 10-26-2009 06:25 PM

WDs are cheap and work fine...

tiger 10-26-2009 06:31 PM

Easy choice, WD black.
