GeoCities, once the Internet's third most visited domain, will be shutting down on Oct. 26, taking with it thousands of user home pages and decades of data. All that information will be history.... Fortunately, some historians are making sure it's not lost to the annals of time.

Founded in 1994 as Beverly Hills Internet, what is now Yahoo GeoCities was one of the first services to offer an easy way for early Internet surfers to publish their own Web pages. Whereas most hosting options of the 1990s were expensive, thus limiting their use to more entrepreneurial pursuits, GeoCities' free hosting space became the home for thousands of sites built around thematically oriented "neighborhoods": conservation, fashion, military, sports, finance, travel, and more.

Damn, well there goes some mid 90's sites I long forgot about lol.

I imagine they are tossing a shit ton of traffic out the window unless it all gets directed to some main customized by keyword search page.

I have to admit I didn't know they were even still around. Should have gotten out while the getting was good.

They couldn't sell it.... idiots.

Besides everyone with a geocities site got a nice e-mail form Yahoo not only telling them of Geocities closing but what great cheap hosting Yahoo could provide for their geocities site plus a great deal on domain to go with it. Even if just 1% take Yahoo up on the offer Yahoo is better off.

That killed it for me; I never found my geocities website after that.

They could have been the "first youtube" because geocities could have kept
allowing more disk space and bandwidth for free and videos would have been every
where at that point.

That's crazy.

What a shame - I used to beat the meat to all those celebrity home pages/tributes Geocities had. Sharon Stone, Cindy Crawford, etc etc - you'd go there and some fan had put up hundreds or thousands of nip slips and hot pics....ah, nostalgia!!

haha my first website was a geocities Star Wars fansite that features pages and pages of Natalie Portman pictures as well as pages and pages of SW stuff.. made the site all in notepad by learning how to view sources of sites I liked.. ah the good ole days of 98/99 :1orglaugh

Just think about all the money they are raking in from all the people who couldn't part with their site or think that "Hey. $5 a month is pretty cheap." or the noobs coming along who think $5 bucks is also cheap for hosting a site.

Fast forward 12 months and all those $5/month charges jump to $10/month.

Never liked GeoCities, was mostly on Homestead myself.

They deactivated my account because I hadn't logged in in years apparently. I built my first site there, even won a 'worst of the web' award for it, lol. It still got decent traffic (last time i knew it was up)..its too bad that people won't even be able to forward their old address to a new one...oh well..
