My computer always locks up when I defrag

When I try to defrag my IDE drive, my pc always locks up before it can finish.

I just use the IDE for storage so there are no EXE's on it -- just many many mp3s (about 30GB)

Has anyone ever had a problem with a drive refusing to be defragged?

I run Windows XP Pro.

Ya thats a common error...
Get a 3rd party defrag proggie (download.com?) that should fix it.

Be carefull with defragging tho...every now and then is good, too much is VERY bad, it will make your hd go kaput....

If you are worried about your hd by the way you might want to check this:

Windows XP lets you analyze the drive first and it will tell you whether or not it needs defragging and this drive is in big need of it.

1) Make sure the screensaver etc is turned off

2) If it still does it - Use Norton Speed Disk... it's 20 times faster than MS Defrag which hasn't changed much since 1995 (Peter Norton wrote it and wasn't about to make it as fast as speed disk lol)

3) BS... we defrag whenever the disk/s hits 98% intact - 2% fragged and we have WD drives here that are 5 years old. Defragging doesn't hurt them. I'm looking at 3 in this system that have been defragged up to 3 times a day since 97 and not a problem with them. :winkwink:

So 20+ for 20+ HD's, (all WD) they have never fussed about defragging, in other words... never failed from it. Hmmmm... never failed from ANYthing in fact. WD all the way. :)

Defrag in SafeMode.

I just re-installed Norton Utilities 2002. I'll use speed disk.
