Quitting smoking...

Gunna try to get my dad to kick the habit any tips I can give him?

MaDalton 10-07-2009 05:11 PM

it's easy if you want it. the first 2-3 days are hard because of physical withdrawal, after that it's only in your head. i've been a heavy smoker, decided one day to stop and didn't touch a cigarette since then. i think it's like 8 years now.

food tastes better, stairs don't bother you that much anymore and girls smell better too ;)

I am on my 10th day and to be honest with you it is hard as hell. however I have not smoked for 10 days and i can already feel it, it feels much better when i inhale deep, feels much better.

I cough more now then i did when i smoked though, but people tell me it will be like that for like 2 weeks.

As far as tips, I am using the patch and it seems to work well, when I have a craving I suck on a lolipop which helps as well.

Wishing your dad good luck with it, he will feel much better.

Sebastian

I won't say it's easy, but totally possible. I smoked for 7 years, been smoke free for 3.

The first YEAR is the hardest, especially if you like to drink and go out to bars. I quit before and relapsed a couple times within 5-6 months.

The only tip I can offer is tell him to start exercising. I don't believe in patches, nicotine gums, lasers, etc..Those might help with the physical part of the addiction, but as stated above, the hardest part is the actual habit itself.

show him some pictures of lung cancer and that'll stop him from smoking. good luck

FrozenJag 10-08-2009 05:09 AM

Make him eat his pack of cigarettes and maybe he'll be disgusted enough afterward not to want to smoke. :D

I smoked 25 -35 cigs a day before i used the patches, they totally work! Get the lowest Mg patch though, I used the patch for 7 days and i was sorted out. Its the best thing i ever did and leaving my girlfriend was as well.

Good luck to you and your dad

you're right about that: there is a very dangerous point after a couple of months (it was seven for me in my first attempt) when you think that you stayed smoke free for so long that one cigarette can't harm, especially when drunk. big mistake, i bought a pack 20 minutes later. :Oh crap

Cold turkey and a lot of "will to health"...

ajrocks 10-08-2009 06:38 AM

I'm 10 months clean now. The first 2 weeks are real bad, that it gets to a point where you only suffer a few times a day. Around 8 months in I started to really miss smoking again though. Its a life long commitment to stop.

Try the patch, it worked for me, just enough help to make it past the bad times.

Best of luck to your old man, it isnt easy!

DamianJ 10-08-2009 06:59 AM

6 months to the day since I quit.

I used patches for first 3 months. Helped me.

I also had a new gf who doesn't smoke and she was AMAZINGLY supportive and patient. That helped a lot.

Good luck to your old man though.

I was a heavy smoker for like ~5 years.

But no I haven't smoked since the end of January :) Soon it will be 1 year :)

It's hard, but you have to keep in mind, that, not to smoke is much better than smoke :)

Agent 488 10-08-2009 07:39 AM

my dad took a week off work. never smoked again.

Agent 488 10-08-2009 07:41 AM

all about rituals and triggers.

p.q. 10-08-2009 07:43 AM

no luck here. working from home doesn't help at all.

tranza 10-08-2009 07:44 AM

My dad quit! Hope you can help yours...good luck!

michael.kickass 10-08-2009 08:18 AM

I always suggest wannabe quitters to substitute the habit with something else, it can be gum, food, candy, whatever helps release the stress. :2 cents:

Raven 10-08-2009 08:25 AM

wow. that's going to be hard unless he wants to quit. that's the key.

when our doc asked us why we wanted to stop, i think he expected me to say for health reasons, blah blah blah...instead i said i was offended at the price of cigarettes and supplying them for me, my honey, and my mother in law was costing almost 400. a month. it had nothing to do with being able to afford or not afford...its was offensive. and that was my reason. i love to smoke.

doc gave us chantix. we did NOT follow the instructions. i don't get the stop date routine. the drug is designed to decrease desire, which it does..and if you do desire a cig, it passes quickly....the dreams are wild, like being on acid while asleep...but we were on it a month, i was down to 2 cigs and then stopped.

we are all smoke free now for 2 and a half years. i can be around it; but, the same rules that apply to alcoholics apply to smokers like me.

can't ever have another one.

still, can't stress enough....dad has to want to stop. otherwise, it's an exercise in futility.

WebairMetz 10-08-2009 08:29 AM

smoke free for 10 years. Best thing I ever did. Cold Turkey...you need to want to quit and I am a firm believer of that. nothing a doc can say that a pack doesnt say...smoking causes cancer. if you want to quit....just do it.

Tom_PM 10-08-2009 08:36 AM

All you can do is get him to want to quit, once he wants to quit then there's probably lots more advice.

IPSKeith 10-08-2009 08:38 AM

What everyone said is true....he needs to want to quit. It is best if he finds a healthy substitute for the habit. If he is running or working out he realizes how much better he feels. He also realizes the "lifestyle" of being healthy really is. It is not easy but it is rewarding when you feel good and look good. Get him a membership to a gym and ask him to promise to give it two months. Once he sees a 67 year old lady spending hours on a machine that he can't spend three minutes on he will get the point. It worked for a close friend of mine when I did it. Good luck

Tom_PM 10-08-2009 08:48 AM

How old is your dad? Tell him you know someone who's dad died at 46, mother died at 67 and himself had a heart attack at 42.

cosis 10-08-2009 09:00 AM

you need to want to quit and then take chantix

i am 1 1/2 years smoke free

Loch 10-08-2009 09:01 AM

October 15th will be my 4th attempt :(

Hardest thing i have ever done was trying to quit
