No eye-contact with the handshake
 

Be it in business or a personal acquaintance, is there anything more discouraging than meeting someone who doesn't look you in the eyes when they shake your hand? Personally, this bugs the shit out of me. Thoughts?

handshake or otherwise, or i don't trust someone who can't look me in the eyes when we're talking either way...

I didn't say anything about staring. I'm talking about looking someone in the eyes when they shake your hand.

Why would looking someone in the eye when you greet them intimidate them?

no maybe you gave them a really creepy eye lock and they got disturbed and looked away.

I'm not talking about anyone in particular. I've met tons of people who look down, to the side or even close their eyes for a second when you shake their hands. It's almost as if they do it unconsciously or something.

If you get swine flu from the handshake does it really matter?

eye contact is one of the ways that us primates assert dominance. i guess if they look away you've won that dominance struggle.

it doesn't necessarily means that they are intimidated by you, as a person.. perhaps your presence (your "aura") makes them back off.. usually happens when the person you meet has a weak personality and lacks self-confidence.

There are plenty of people who will shake your hand, look you in the eyes, and fuck you blind.

I never shake hands.

If the person is under 50 and puts too much into the handshake i assume they are trying to impress me with their honesty. thus making me nervous.

Agreed it is a big deal to me as well. I could do without handshakes but if you can't talk and look me in the eye there is something wrong.

Thats too strong of a reaction. Some people just don't have the self confidence to look others in the eye.

I am often guilty of it. If it is a 1 off hand shake no problem. If there are lots involved in a period of time of say 30-60 minutes like say a meet and greet. I fail. By that time my neck is just fucking sore from looking up so damn much.

Though I do not bitch if people do not kneel down to shake my hand. Few people have, you sort of notice them.

I sometimes look away, no idea why, probably because I have ADHD, so a shiny object usually catches my attention...

I think you are putting too much focus on it if you actually notice people blink when shaking your hand. I'd say it's likely more to do with self confidence with whom ever. They probably don't even know they are doing it.

Not looking in the eyes is a definite warning sign -- but so is a really weak / limp handshake IMO.

Sometimes in an extended conversation, i become too self aware of where I'm looking at them, like focusing on the left ieye or the right eye or whatever, and all the 'meta data' of the conversation becomes distracting and irritating to me.

I fucking hate handshakes.

Do you people have any idea just how many people don't follow the basic rules of hygiene? About a quarter of people don't even wash their hands after using the bathroom.

Lol sounds like a lot of you guys don't like any kind of contact, and that's fine. But every so often you have to greet someone and shake their hand. Try not to be a pussy and at least glance at their eyes for a split second.

I generally don't mind shaking someone's hand. As a female it doesn't seem to be as required or expected of me, but shoulder touching is seeming to be coming back in a big way. I kinda feel that is more of an invasion of my personal space.

I don't mind it by friends / people I've known or worked with for a while, even casual aquantances. But new introductions, virtual strangers, I find it almost offensive. :disgust
