san diego peeps?

whats it like living there?

ive been looking more and more and san diego is interesting... as long as you can afford rent, it sounds like a fun/beautiful city.. am i wrong?

What can i get for $2k/month rent?

Its not bad, expensive as hell though. 2K can get you a really nice 1 BED in mission valley or La Jolla, or a decent 2-3 bed house.

Moved to San Diego 7 years ago, I love it. I think $2k/mo is pretty much the bare minimum for a decent place. You can get a 1 bedroom apartment in a good area for around $1200-1500/mo. Price depends primarily on the area you want to live. IE: You can get a mansion on the border of Mexico dirt cheap, if you don't mind border jumpers running through your yard.

I've lived in la jolla for a few yrs. You can get a nice apartment in la jolla for under 1500 a month. Its a college town with tons of chicks. Safe neighborhood thats close to the beach, shopping, downtown, etc. weather is always nice and you won't be bored.

Moved here 7 years ago - apartments are on the high side, but affordable.

But even now, despite the recession, houses are crazy-expensive. (I'm not even talking about the cost to buy them - I'm talking about maintenance, taxes, insurance, etc. I pay about the same amount in property taxes here, that I paid for a beautiful 2 BR apartment in a big city on the East Coast.)

And everything else (food, gas, etc.) is 10-25% more than you'd be accustomed to paying anywhere else in the US except Hawaii - and I've lived in some expensive cities in the past.

On the other hand, I go outside to get my mail in January, in my T-shirt and jogging shorts :thumbsup

I go to LJ once every two weeks - and it's amazing what the economy has done to it; even in the middle of the Village, there are 2-3 more stores holding "going out of business" sales every time I'm there :(

That is just a scam... another example of people taking advantage of a poor economy. All those store owners are still driving their Mercedes to their $3m house on the beach.

Maybe - I just know a store I used to stop in regularly was just *gone* a month ago with no warning - and a friend who's lived in LJ for decades says it's the worst he's ever seen it there.

I use to live in la jolla for over 5 years. you can find a great 1-2brm condo/apt for under 2k easily, remember more closer to the ocean part la jolla beach etc the more expensive it gets.

But you can be like 10min away and find something in la jolla village dr. next to shopping centers as well..

Downtown high rise are also an option where most of the fun happens at nightlife there some great high rise you should look into prices and what not..

A lot of people are getting scared and selling off everything. Putting their cash in a mattress ;)

If you don't have as much money to spend on a place, go more inland. I live in PQ near Poway and used to live in El Cajon - both areas are a good 15 miles or so inland and are hotter areas, but are really nice to live in and much cheaper than the coast or central SD (Mission Valley etc.). I've lived in San Diego my whole life except for a year in Phoenix, and I'm not sure I'd ever consider living somewhere else even if it is really expensive to live here.

My cousin just rented an apartment 2 bedroom no garage for $1450 5 minutes from Seaworld.

xxweekxx 10-05-2009 05:32 AM

I've seen a few going out of biz signs at UTC and in downtown la jolla but mostly I don't see people hurting that much. Still alot of big spenders in la jolla :winkwink:

I remember talking to ya a few yrs back and you had a condo in sd? did you sell that?

xxweekxx 10-11-2009 02:19 PM

bump!!!!!!!!!!

I had a three bedroom house in San Carlos for $1850. It was a decent area but I would not recommend it to you, took about 20-25 minutes to get downtown.

masubuko 10-11-2009 02:31 PM

2k can get you a pretty nice place very close to the beach in North County i.e. Solana Beach, Cardiff, Encinitas. Lots of condos in Solana around that rate. :thumbsup

MikeSmoke 10-12-2009 09:51 PM

Ask around before you rent - we had a nice apartment in a nice area for around 2K before we bought our house - and we were forced out by an infestiation of ants that the exterminators couldn't get rid of - it was bad enough that they were swarming all over the bathroom and kitchen - but they got into our bed. And all the managers could tells us was "San Diego has an ant problem."
So talk to neighbors before you sign anything to make sure there aren't any little surprises lurking :2 cents:

I just got back from a convention in San Diego, what an amazing place and the weather is fantastic!

TheAmericanCannibal 10-12-2009 10:39 PM

I lived there for 11 years.

5 in Pacific Beach with my brother D$ 1996-2001 We paid $750 for a 2 bedroom back then
Now that place is $1375

2 in Del Mar in a 3 bedroom house with an ocean view was $2500
Master P was my neighbor!

4 years in Carlsbad above the LaCosta Resort my 2 bedroom 2 bath ocean view townhouse was $1500

and I miss the hell out of that place.
I had a lot of GFY'ers in that house!!
