what % of 20 year olds could name the Beatles?

i don't get it - when I was a kid i knew all the names and who were the stars of my parents generation. just from seeing the records in their record collection and from watching TV reading newspapers and magazines. i just asked a 20 year old if she could give me the names of any or all of the Beatles.

"Tom john bill bob and curtis.
Baaaa hahahaha. No, i dont know any. But i know aerosmith band members. Hahaha "

EthnicLover 10-03-2009 11:54 AM

Maybe her parents don't have Beatles records/CDs...or she's just an idiot.

How many 50 year olds could name the top five younger stars of today?

It's a generational thing.

Libertine 10-03-2009 12:03 PM

Being 27, I can name them easily.

i'm 45 - music is a thousand times more fragmented than it was in the 70's but I could name 5 stars from most genres.

TheDoc 10-03-2009 03:25 PM

I can't name any of the Beatles or any songs they played.

Then again, I can't name most Band members other than if the singer is the name of the band. :)

Si 10-03-2009 03:48 PM

Ringo, Gringo, Paul and Pete?

Riffhard 10-03-2009 03:52 PM

I'm 20 and know 'em all. But I'm obsessed with classic rock. :thumbsup

Unfortunately, The Beatles would more than likely be the band her grandparents liked...at this point.

I couldn't tell you shit about the music my grandparents liked either.

Iron Fist 10-03-2009 04:02 PM

No idea... oh.. and don't care either.

BlackCrayon 10-03-2009 04:07 PM

Not everyone is a big music fan. Some people just like songs they hear on the radio and don't really know anything about them.

ztik 10-03-2009 04:36 PM

Uhh really who cares, its a band. Ontop of that they suck, I don't really care for boybands

slapass 10-03-2009 05:16 PM

Three people here 2 sixteen year olds and a 40 year old. None of us had all four.

Robbie 10-03-2009 05:27 PM

I don't know how any kids could not know who they are after the last few weeks.

I went into Best Buy with my teenage daughters last week. It was BEATLEMANIA in there. They released the Beatles albums digitally remastered AND at the same time released the Guitar Hero Beatles game. I also believe they finally did the ITunes deal all at the same time.

Anyway, I wanted to get the Box Set of all the Beatles albums. But the sales guy told me that the Box Set was sold out of every Best Buy in Las Vegas and was on a 2 week backorder!

So I bought The White Album digitally remastered (sounds great by the way)

Meanwhile my girls were in line with about 50 teens to play The Beatles guitar hero game which was all set up with a huge display.

I ended up buying that for them as well.

And for the last week I've been listening to my teenage girls singing everything from "while my guitar gently weeps" to "helter skelter"

And all of their friends have it too.

So I'd say The Beatles are getting to be very well known amongst teenagers at the moment.

Fucking Paul McCartney knows how to make some serious money.

MikeSmoke 10-03-2009 05:34 PM

There are several on GFY who know just enough about the Beatles to assure us that "they suck" or "they were a boy band" or "they were nowhere as good as Oasis." :1orglaugh

Haha yeah.

I think aside from maybe 3-4 bands today perhaps less (really racking my brain), can anyone name any bands that started after the 70's that will honestly be known in 20-30 years?

Listen you named some good bands, some with possible staying power of maybe another decade. However you added in Oasis which well makes things worse. Simple fact of music life, if you can not make it in the US no matter how well known you are in England or some tiny sausage ville hamlet in Europe. You will be forgotten fairly soon.

CaptainHowdy 10-03-2009 07:20 PM

I never think of The Beatles... am I sick or something?

Hell yeah. And not only did Billy Preston almost become the 5th Beatle...a few years later in the early to mid 1970's he did it again with the Rolling Stones. Toured with them and played on their albums. He was a tremendously talented keyboard player. He passed away a couple of years ago WAY to young. But he lived a helluva life and even had a couple of hit singles on his own during the 1970's. Check out his site: http://www.billypreston.net/

Oasis, System of a down and Artic monkeys are nu metal? Only 3 of those bands you could say are nu metal.

Evil Ryan 10-03-2009 07:46 PM

U2 i think will be remembered for a while and i hate to say it but Spice Girls and Madonna probably will be to :(

Rolling Stones also.

Jakke PNG 10-04-2009 01:18 AM

I'm 30 and I can, and I bet a lot more 20 year olds can soon too.. didn't some playstation/xbox game just come out "beatles rockband", or something? These things 'teach' young ones these days.

OnTime 10-04-2009 01:52 AM

Always knew the members of most bands.

Stop talking to the talent cause you aren't winning.

You asked about the Beatles, she had no idea, so mentioned the next oldest, lamest band she knew of. Probably the band liked by the oldest lamest people she knew such as her parents or that geography teacher who thought he was down with the kidz,.. and came up with... Aerosmith.

But in her head you can rest assured she was thinking, ewwww, gross, old people questions! I'd rather he was just sleazy, like all the rest!

Rolling stones is pre 1970s, by 8 years.
