Michael, on a more serious note, this is a very good point..

can people's account names be changed?

I can't tell you how hard it is to track affiliate payments when they use some mumbo jumbo account name.. (we use over 400 sponsors, and of that probably at least 60+ payout via epass.. )

If it is possible it would be good to know, then maybe we can pressure these programs to change to a name that matches their program.

Can be done but its not easy but all sponsors can put a note in the payment so it will show in the message in the message center.
