A "60 Minutes" producer was arrested for trying to extort/blackmail "Late Night" host David Letterman to the tune of $2 million, in order to keep secret Dave's sexual affairs with women that worked on the show.

Dave admitted to the charges - it will be interesting to see whether or not he can keep his job if it is determined that his actions amounted to sexual harrasment given his status as the women's boss. :helpme

On his show last night, Letterman stated more than once that he had slept with "women" (plural) that work on his show, indicating that there were others he slept with besides the one identified in the extortion plot.

I'm not talking about morality here - I could care less who Dave sleeps with (well maybe with the exception of Paul Shaffer).

The larger issue (apart from the extortion attempt), is that Letterman was the employer/boss of the women. They could in all likelihood sue him and CBS. Therefore, CBS may choose to mitigate their potential liability by pre-emptively ousting Dave on the grounds of sexual harassment.

I think it's great that he came out and told everyone what he did. I don't blame the guy at all.

Dave makes around $35 million a year, which means he makes CBS significantly more. No idea what kind of damage a lawsuit like that could do financially, but I am willing to wager that CBS would be willing to put up with quite a bit of flak and still keep him around.

When there is an employer-employee relationship involved, the lines can get blurred. Many lawsuits have been lost, settlements paid out, and careers destroyed over such issues.

Letterman is lucky that he is a celebrity, otherwise getting caught with his Worldwide Pants down around his ankles, boinking the hired help, might cost him dearly in money, reputation and career.

In this culture, being a celebrity often is a license to get away with things which ordinary citizens might not.

Robert J. "Joe" Halderman, a producer for the true-crime show "48 Hours," pleaded not guilty in a Manhattan court as he was arraigned on one count of attempted first-degree grand larceny, punishable by five to 15 years in prison. Bail was set at $200,000.

Halderman's connection to Letterman was not immediately clear, but public records show that until August, he lived in Norwalk, Conn., with Stephanie Birkitt, a 34-year-old woman who works on the "Late Show" staff and used to work at "48 Hours."

Birkitt was an assistant to Letterman on the "Late Show" and frequently appeared on camera with the host in comedy bits. Last month, Birkitt moved to Manhattan's upper West Side. There was no answer Friday at a phone listed in her name.

It was also unclear how many women were involved in relationships with Letterman. All of the affairs took place before Letterman's marriage, said Tom Keaney, spokesman for Letterman's production company, Worldwide Pants.

CBS issued a statement Friday: "We think it was appropriate for Dave to disclose the matter publicly as he has, and we are continuing to cooperate with authorities."

David will keep his job - the public will side with David in his honesty and those extorting will be scum to the nation. David is well loved and anyone in power (celeb or otherwise) knows that they probably did the same thing and if they stand out against Dave that the same thing can happen to them.
