Anyone significant using UltraDNS?
Some guy from UltraDNS has been bugging me every couple of days about switching over our dns from in-house to them. Supposedly other clients have seen a 10% increase in traffic due to their globally distributed name servers.
First of all, I find that claim very hard to believe. Secondly, even if they did get 10% more hits, would that turn into 10% more sales? I doubt it. Does few extra-miliseconds for the initial dns query, matter much when the page is 100+ Kb? Does it matter if we capture 10% more Chinese surfers? They're not going to signup anyway. Before I tell the guy politely to go to hell, I anyone here using UltraDNS? If you are and you have significant traffic (what's signficant is up to you), did you see an increase in traffic when you started using UltraDNS? The other UltraDNS selling points don't really matter. The only that that interests us is their traffic claims. Anyone else getting the hardsell? Supposedly they're going to be in Vegas? |
They are pests.

There is nothing wrong with outsorcing DNS - for example I use EasyDns.com.
But an increase in hits - only a moron would think that was true. The way DNS works is, it gets cached in a billion places all over the Internet, so if you browse to www.xxx.com, you don't even go to the DNS server since in all liklihood somewhere upstream from youits already cached somewhere. And even if its not cached, *your* pc will cache it on the first hit so whether it will take 20 ms or 50 ms is hardly important. You won't be hitting that nameserver again for probably 24 hours. The salesman is an idiot. |
Ultra DNS sounds good, I was gonna use them, till they gave me their price. I laughed so hard that I had to hang up on them.
I didnt like their system either. it was clunky and the sales dude didnt know how to use it. In any case, DNS is so fucking simple to do anyway once you do it, that there is no reason to outsource it. Its just too expensive. They act like Exodus did back in Dot Com gold rush days. |
They have been hitting on us every few days for weeks now, and say they "Really" want to talk to us in vegas.....:(

what was the price tag?

Hey guys, I am using a my hosts DNS and was wondering if they wanted, through DNS. do they have the power to redirect some of my sites traffic to there own sites?? I am just wondering if these sorts of redirects are possible, if i'm not in the USA, whats to stop the hosting company who runs there own sites too from redirecting a small bunch of my sites hits to there site???
