Have any of y'all been contacted by ICANN about your domains?

I got a call on my voicemail from ICANN in regards to one of my unused domains....He said that they're just doing a random sample to check the accuracy of the records.....

They gave me an 877 number to call back and the dude said his computer is frozen and he would call me back in a minute or two....

Have any of y'all been contactec by them?

d-null 09-29-2009 07:30 PM

did you google the 877 number, just to see? I'd be suspicious

Agent 488 09-29-2009 07:30 PM

sounds like a scam.

Va2k 09-29-2009 07:31 PM

I don't answer any numbers I don't recognize, so if they have done it to me then I likely just ignored their call :2 cents:

Why I didn't think of that, I don't know....Anyway, I just googled it and nothing came up.

once a year I get the "please verify your whois info" emails from registrars, but I've never been contacted directly by ICANN

GAMEFINEST 09-29-2009 07:57 PM

sounds like a scam

Cyber Fucker 09-29-2009 08:15 PM

I've never been contacted by ICANN nor I've heard that any webmaster was.

Supz 09-29-2009 08:16 PM

i get emails from registrars about updating them. never a phone call though.

NaughtyRob 09-29-2009 08:19 PM

I never get phone calls, just emails. Also never click on the link directly, never know what kind of phishing scam is going on

After Shock Media 09-29-2009 08:31 PM

just emails asking me to verify info.
Though my registrar has called me when a bulk transfer was done. They wanted to make sure I initiated it and that my account was not breached. Oddly enough I had logged into them while at a hotel to transfer some domains I had sold. I had zero qualms about that and is one major reason I stick with them, even if they are just an enom reseller.

Doug E 09-29-2009 08:33 PM

Could be some dude checking accuracy for himself, maybe wants to report it to icann so he can pick it up somehow after you got stripped of it.

Nope, powerpipe been using them since I could get away from network solutions monopoly.

LiveDose 09-29-2009 09:00 PM

Only by email once per year. It actually comes from Godaddy on behalf of ICANN.

Iron Fist 09-29-2009 09:41 PM

I've been contacted through the e-mail address on file with the registration of the domain. Never ever got a phone call.

Now I did get a phone call from GoDaddy about some of my domains expiring.... that was weird.

YES, I get them from GoDaddy also. Used to make me feel something was wrong. Now I just think GD is obligated to send the notice... which I simply ignore :321GFY

madawgz 09-30-2009 01:37 AM

never received any calls like that before...

BVF 09-30-2009 03:32 AM

Ok, it really was ICANN.....It was just some sort of survey...First they verified that the contact info was correct...ASked if a piece of mail was sent to the address listed, would I get the mail...They asked some preset questions as to why one would look up domains in the whois database, such as to contact them or if I wasn't satisfied, etc....

Then he said thank you and that was it.

dirtymind 09-30-2009 03:58 AM

they should be sound my reliable i tell you. this way most of us think it's a scam.

That still sounds very odd. Can you elaborate on the questions and post the phone number ?

rowan 09-30-2009 08:27 AM

When they called you should have said you would call them back on a number that was visible on their web page.

tiger 09-30-2009 08:38 AM

Sounds fishy to me.

The number I called was 877-259-4326...I don't feel like elaborating any further as my radiator went out and I'm pissed off.
