Help me with info about rackshack servers,
I'm down to much
They are cheap but if they're better then others??
I need some help with that,losing to much money now
I use 1000gb a month

Rackshack doesn't provide any type of support with your servers. So if you are good with basic unix commands, you can find your way around. Also they have a message board with most common issues you will face while managing your box.

They are a good cheap solution if you aren't affraid to play yourself with your server.

I have some space left on my servers (not at rackshack). I can offer you at $0.25 per gig. I have hsphere installed on my server, so you can create email accounts, ftp account, add domains, etc...

They are good but they dont give you any support at all. So if you dont know how to manage a server dont buy from them otherwise you will have problems with the server.

I have one of those 10 meg unmetered lines there.

They suck ass. If they weren't so cheap and simple I'd leave.

I can go into details:

when we first got the box we couldn't break 2 megabits - on a 10 meg line that's not good. Turns out they configged us to run half duplex and screwed THAT up so we were crawling. Then they logged in as root and rebooted, causing us to lose hours of work. That's where it started within the first 8 hours.

We've had fiber cuts, unexplained outages, ignored outages, they've blocked IP's (our own static office IP's) at the router to prevent us from getting into our server (they claim it was accidental)... That was a nightmare - they cut it off at night and told me it was off till the day crew came in. We lost a whole day of work.

All in all I would say they really do suck. Their support is awful and rude, and they end every discussion with "remember you don't have an SLA with us". That in itself is discouraging.

But they're really cheap.

Bottom line I don't know if I'm gonna stay there or move my galleries elsewhere. For more info about the service see my posting in the Cogent thread.

Go with a reseller that will bill you for months after a cancellation email after moving your domains at the same time you sent the email.

Rackshack is outstanding. But you have to be your own Linux admin. Don't even consider it unless updating a kernel means nothing to you except for a half hour of your time. Also you need to supply weekly security updates from redhat - they won't touch your server.

I have a couple of servers on the 400 gig P4 $129/month deal. Good clean bandwidth and the customers on my premium paysite get good performance. I monitor it at 1 minute intervals from home via a program and its not been down in a month for even a second.

They will put everybody else out of business. In 10 years, there will be only Rackshack.

There will always be a need for Managed Services. Not everyone is as smart as you. :=):321GFY

Oh I completely agree. (Not that everyone isn't as smart as me, he, he, he) but about the fact that most people want managed services.

I just think that in 5 years many of the people who provide managed servers will in fact be leasing rackshack servers to host their customers on.:Graucho

Plus, most of Rackshacks servers can be ordered with Ensim. You don't need to know Unix commands or any other root commands. Once you've set up a single domain, you will find it to be a piece of cake.

Well to be ohnest Vir. Mike, you must have just had a bad server, or they screwed it up somehow??

I have had 2 servers there for a few months at rackshack, and I am telling you I really haven't had 1 problem.

I have had to do 2 reboots for some reason in that time, but there support is 24/7 and fast. I turn in a reboot trouble ticket at say 3am PST, and by 3:15am my server is rebooted.

Again, if you don't have a SYSADMIN or someone to lock down your server tight, don't use rackshack.

If you are ok with unix, or have someone to work on the server, they are as good as gold.

oh, and there support forums are top notch, I mean it guys.

also, security is #1, as soon as you get a new server there,

you or your sysadmin guys, turn off telnet, SSH only, install Bastille firewall with IP Chains, etc. also have them turn off all Ports not needed.

get a box with ENSIM, easy as heck to add new domains, emails, etc, etc.

Also, if you need the best damm admin, who knows rackshacks / ensims servers 1000%, trustworthy, and dedicated,
