thinkin about relocating from LA to Miami FL.. any input?!?

i've been debating for a while now about relocating to Miami FL for a lot of different reasons. weighted all pluses and minuses between LA and Miami, but came to a split decision.

basically i need input from people who have made the move from the west coast to South Florida . was it worth your while? do you hate or love South Florida? do taxes or low property values make it that much more worth it to move to FL? any input please.. i'm beggin here :)

Mr Cheeks 12-10-2002 03:22 PM

do you guys like bump*err cars ?! :)

Just the Village Idiot 12-10-2002 03:33 PM

Getting out of LA = :thumbsup

Doesn't matter if it's Boise.

BV 12-10-2002 03:33 PM

I'm from Florida so I really can't enlighten you on what the change was like, but I can tell you if you are looking for low taxes and property values you are not going to find it in South Florida, especially Miami.

The Dawg 12-10-2002 03:44 PM

The best advantages over LA:

* Cleaner air
* No earthquakes
* The drivers arent as bad ( Believe it or not)
* No high speed chases on the expressway EVERYDAY

Compared to LA the taxes and housing prices are cheaper too.

Not sure which is better, Earthquakes or Hurricanes?

Pornwolf 12-10-2002 03:47 PM

I went from L.A. to Miami for 2 months before finally moving back to NY. I was bored out of my skull in Miami by the sixth week. Beautiful city and I love staying for a week or two but that's about it.

neither is better, however with a hurricane you have some sort of warning.

Beware if you drive through Orlando, I swear to God, I have never seen so many aggressive drivers. They piss me off so bad getting right up on my bumper.

South Florida is so beautiful. I would rather be there than here in Orlando. (by far)

The price of living isnt to awful bad. Depends on your tastes. :)

Hot Tropical Babes 12-10-2002 03:54 PM

BTW, i would not go as far as miami, I would look into Boca or FT. Lauderdale.

KRL 12-10-2002 04:09 PM

I lived in California for 16 years. California has lots of greats things but an equal number of negative things about living out there. I decided to move after our house got nailed by the Northridge quake in '94. After that event, I said to my wife fuck this we're moving.

Looked in that magazine Unique Homes and I saw a bunch of properties in Boca Raton that reminded me of the LA lifestyle and look. Flew down for a few days to check it out down here and fell in love with the place instantly.

I've been all over the US and I think Florida has one of the finest lifestyles available. I love warm weather having grown up in Philly and all that cold and snow bs every year as a kid. Florida is year round perfect climate. It gets a tad humid in the summer but by the end of a season or two you get used to it. It gets San Francicso chilly in the fall at nights so you get just enough cold to remind you of season changes. You have gorgeous beaches and the ocean at your doorstep.

If you like boating, golfing, site seeing, and other outdoor activities Florida has it all for leisure activities and the Bahamas are a quick hop away too for more fun in the sun and gambling.

The people here are great. Way more friendly then in LA. And here you get to know people much faster and easier. I've never had so many friends as I do since coming here. You do have a lot of retirees, but you get used to them too. Its gotten younger here and a lot of high tech companies have ops down here. During the season you get the snowbirds, and it gets just a bit more crowded, but its not as bad as LA and those kind of crowds everywhere and traffic.

Great restaurants, on the level of NYC and LA and some say better because of the variety. Shopping is fantastic. Great malls.
Prices down here are very reasonable also. Real Estate is pricey but you get a lot more value than in LA for sure.

To give you an idea a million dollar estate here would cost at least twice to three times that in LA. And the properties here you don't have to worry about quakes.

A lot of people say what about hurricanes. We'll I've been here 8 years and only in 2 of those did we get any significant storms that I would consider rough and even they weren't that bad. Just lots of heavy winds and water. The only hurricanes that really hit Palm Beach County and did damage were in the '20's and back then building codes were way different. Today everything here is built with wind force storms in mind.

Crime is high like any major metro area. But I haven't had any bad experiences at all yet. In LA had them all the time.

A lot of adult biz is down here too. As are many of the biggest players in the biz.

The girls here are phenomenal looking. Babes everywhere you go. And friendlier too.

On a 1 to 10 I give this place a 9.75. Its not perfect perfect, but its as close to perfect compared to anywhere else I've seen. I highly recommend you try it out.

eRock 12-10-2002 04:09 PM

I've had a shit load of friends that have moved down there & visit there constantly(south beach anyway) & I haven't heard one bad thing. Personally, it'd be WAY too hot for me, but...to each his own.

Hot Tropical Babes 12-10-2002 04:15 PM

my dad is getting ready to sell his home on the intercoastal. Its on the boca/delray line. also has a huge boat he wants to sell:Graucho I hate to see him leave there, but he has sold his bars, and bought a beautiful RV. and now its time to travel. :)
I'll miss the boat, that is where we always stay when we visit, its like a lush two bedroom apartment on water.

actually the closer you are to the ocean, the cooler it is. Dad leaves his doors open and windows alot,,,, always a beautiful breeze! But here in Orlando, you'll burn UP quick. Even the pool gets too hot in the summer :( So , I try to swim at night,,,,,

ColKurtz 12-10-2002 04:19 PM

I'm also looking to do the southern california to florida move around this time next year.

About the only positive of california is the weather. Thats about it. High state tax, high sales tax, high crime, rude fake people. With so much overcrowding and inflated property costs, its just not a place I can see putting roots down.

I'm thinking of maybe the gulf side of florida. Naples maybe, but not sure. Or possibly a decent area somewhere between daytona and boca.

Penrod 12-10-2002 04:21 PM

I have one word for you...........Tampa.:thumbsup

KRL 12-10-2002 04:55 PM

Oh yeh, forgot that big one. No state income tax!!! Calfornia is outrageous. I think it was 8.5% last time I remember. So if you make a mil that's almost 100k out the door you could keep if you lived in Florida. That adds up if you make a lot of money.

Col Kurtz. California weather is hot as hell, at least in the Valley. I recorded a temp once of 134 in Calabasas.

I lived in Laguna Niguel for a while it was better there. And down near La Jolla is good too.

When I lived in LA I missed rainy days. Florida has just the right balance of them. And beautiful tropical flowers like you see in some areas of California.

Hot Trop Babes - where in Delray? My ex is over near Tropic Isles. And couple of my partners in Boca Bay. Beautiful homes over that way.

Mr Cheeks 12-10-2002 05:02 PM

i really appreciate the input fellas (specially to KRL).

natural calamity wize, true Florida has some fucked up hurricanes, but liek someone mentioned, you at least get some sort of warning.
i'm just thinking that i might be better of dealing with winds than quakes in the long run.

the only reason why i would wanna stay in the LA area is because i made so many contacts in the valley for content shooting. people are starting to refer brand new girls to me, sometimes a couple of days after they turn 18.
on the other hand, there is somewhat of a downfall to the abundance of content producers in this part of the world too. the demand for models is so high that it drives prices up as well. furthermore some of these girls are also definitely overshot.

internet content producers were able to get away with $350-$500 for a hardcore shoot (no anal) about a year ago but not anymore. girls are starting not to differenciate anymore between internet and video poducers.. which is really fucked up, cuz god knows that i don't have the budget of these big video companies.

and it does not help either that the Nasty Dollars crew comes to LA and basically pays these girls 800-1000 dollars with practially no bargaining.

i'm just thinking that overall, relocating to a place by the beach, with less traffic, lower taxes, less female talent (but lower cost of production), lower cost of living might help in building a better future. or am i wrong?

cherrylula 12-10-2002 05:05 PM

I have family who moved to Miami to ditch the earthquake thing....shortly after they were rocked the fuck by one of those lovely hurricanes.

Give me an earthquake over a hurricane any day. People in the south live with hurricanes like its no big deal... when an earthquake hits we stop, look around, and usually just go back to what we were doing. Yeah there is sometimes damage, but at least its nothing even slightly comparable to the yearly hurricane season.

although spooky things like a crazy storm sound somewhat exciting :1orglaugh

If half the people in California were to disappear, it would be soooo much better. Make that 75%.

KRL 12-10-2002 05:43 PM

Cherrylulu you can't be serious. You would rather deal with a quake were you get no warning over a hurricane where you know with todays excellent forecasting days ahead.

Did you miss the 87 quake in San Fran and the 94 quake. I was up in SF on biz 3 days after the quake there and saw destruction beyond belief. People were still buried under the collapsed freeways. The 94 quake was horrendous. 8 years later and I still can feel the sensation of that fucker in my bones. Our whole gorgeous house got all thrashed from it. And had it happened a few days earlier I wouldn't be here writing cause a place we were doing some video editing in collapsed completely.

Wait til the monster quake comes. Then you'll see everyone fleeing LA. Earthquakes never bothered me til that 94 one hit. So I know usually they aren't too bad. But I don't like going to sleep at night knowing my whole world can be thrashed without notice. Screw that. At least here if something nasty is coming you can get on a plane and get out of the way. And if you live inland in a well built house you're pretty safe here anyway, in most cases.

But to each his own I guess.

UncleJimmy 12-10-2002 05:49 PM

I was born and raised in LA (mostly lived in SF Valley other than brentwood & santa monica) but now when I go back to visit family I don't think I could EVER live there again.

The color of the air is just plain wrong like 99% of the year! When I grew up there back in the 70s and 80s it was only the wrong color sky about 50% of the year.

Too high priced, too dirty, more crowded now, etc

so :thumbsup on getting outta that joint!

However, as far as a move to Miami I'm not sure about that one either, I lived there for 14 months before Hurricane Andrew blew my lil casa away. I LOVED the city, people were nice & shit but dammmmmmmm the bugs & humidity drove me insane. I can't get used to living in a wet sauna 9mos out of the year...

So if I had to relocate I'd have to pick a few more cities to look at...

Have you considered San Diego? Santa Barbara? and the list goes on, even outside of Cali there's a lot of cool places...

I'm a fan of the desert so AZ was a fine move for me, left Pismo Beach about 3 months ago now. Nice up there but a lil 'too out there' and chilly for me....

KRL,
I cant remember the name of the residential area. It is right on the line of delray beach and boca. There is a huge cadalac dealership near it... I am having a mind blank here! He lives right on the intercoastal. I love watching the christmas boat parade from the back deck. He usually puts the boat in it, but I dont think we'll make it this year ..

Sama 12-10-2002 06:50 PM

You did a great job of describing FL. I concur with every bit of what you said! I love this place! :thumbsup

Funkito 12-10-2002 08:49 PM

I was born and raised in the SFV and you got it all right about leaving LA. It has gone to shit in too many ways. I'm thinking of South Florida too. That '94 earthquake was un-fucking-believable.

I was down in St. Pete's in April or May for biz & all these black dudes were laughin' at me sayin', "Looks like the Chicago boy can't take the heat" I was drenched! Can't even imagine what it'd be like in the middle of Florida. Yikes!

TheFLY 12-10-2002 11:30 PM

The beach is nice... but maybe consider something besides Miami... Miami has some bad areas -- crime, poverty...

Plan on learning to speak Spanish or pretty much you're going to get a lot of attitude from the locals... Total bullshit, but what can you do? They don't give a fuck and will sometimes pretend to not understand you.

I'd investigate a little further north too...

You wanna be in DisneyLand or DisneyWorld?!

I grew up in Okla, I thought that was hot in the summer. Nothing compares to here :helpme
Every night (here in orlando) the humidity is so high that it feels like a warm muggy shower just took place outside. In Boca, it doesnt feel that way to me.. it is so nice and the ocean breezes are so relaxing.

Also, no one told me how bad the red ants are here. They hurt like a son of a bitch. We pay big bucks for a exterminator to come out every other month and spray. We are ant free now. I was afraid they would chew my rottie up.

also, never ask a riccan if they cook good mexican food LOL
that really seems to irritate them "Who Knew"? :) I thought all spanish people fixed mexican food. Good luck finding texmex here too.

If it werent for Don Pablo's, Id move.

The weather in Miami is hot and muggy. So. If you like breathing water, you'll love Miami.

Miami has a super great night life. If you're into clubbing, it's there. Restaurants are primo.

Lots of webmasters are there. Content is there. So are the palmettos.

It's not a cheap place to live.

THANK YOU!

i have been to Miami a few times. interesting that words like:

"hurricanes"
"tropical storms"
"ghettos"
"no habla englese"
"rainy season"
and "what the fuck are you looking at motherfucker"

never seem to make it into the conversation when describing what a beautiful place it is.
