is this democracy or just an illusion?

i was discussing this with a few friends & i figure we've got some intelligent cats here who can think objectively & rationally.... i also haven't been around the board long so excuse me if this topic has been vsited.

do you really tihnk we have any control over our government? i was just reading the thread about canada... also watched Taken & just the fucking news.... its rather depressing that no matter what they issue is, not even when we bond together can we do anything to sway the government...

i hate to make this an example, but why is it the government keeping documents that we want to have access to? of course i'm referring to information regarding the us govt's knowledge of extra terrestrial life? what the fuck else are they hiding? shit... many will say, "well, if u dont like it... push off to some other country?" lol... how long will we be able to say that? the terrorist shit... bush... no 1 likes our ass & its not because of the citizens my friends.

i don't know... maybe its just me.... but overall shit seems pretty fucked up in the homeland right now, kids. what can be done to prevent the US from suffering the fate of Ancient Rome?

....

Rome & every other great civilization was destroyed by outsiders mixing into their population.

Shut down the borders, deport anyone who's not a citizen and we shall rule for a thousand years :thumbsup

I don't know if it's an illusion or what, but...

Life is a game where, no matter what you do, no matter who is in power or out of power, no matter who lies or who tells the truth, no matter how much or how power any person is, they take back all the marbles at the end of the game.

DEATH, the great equalizer.

And to increase the irony, the Cosmos dies as well. There is no living forever for anybody.

actually Rome faced a lot more than just barbarians.. the spread of malaria is speculated to have killed countless thousands opening rome up to invasion. there are many other theories but none of them cite "outsiders" being the only cause. and it was never "enemies within" like the current situation as you intimate. Rome became great in the first place because of outsiders they conquered mixing with their population.

the US will suffer the same fate as England eventually.. watch out for China.. they will surely surpass the US sometime this century... their economy has doubled every ten years...

Wait, what country do you mean?

The US is definitely not a true democracy, especially when you take into consideration the roles of the media and the political parties. You can't be democratic with two parties who agree on most issues supposedly representing the various positions of such a diverse population of people. You can't be democratic when you don't have the information you need to make educated decisions, which requires an unbiased media, which we don't have. It's pretty bad when you have to read other countries' newspapers to find out what's going on in your own country.

But, having said that, it's a little naive to say it's an "illusion". That's the attitude that causes apathy, and keeps people at home on voting day. We can make a difference. Even voting for a losing party can have an impact. The system is flawed, but it's not broken.

Do you own an oil company? If so, you have plenty of influence.

You are correct. We are not a democracy and were not intended to be a democracy. We are and always have been a Republic.
