2012 - The End of Days?

I'm designing a site for a Cancun-Mayan culture site and I was just reading about the Mayan numerals and calendar when I came across this. Pretty interesting in my opinion.

http://www.2012doomsdays.com/whatisdoomsday2012.htm

The ancient Mayans left codes that clearly suggest something cataclysmic and apocalyptic is at hand when their calendar ends. The date of this "end" is either December 21 or December 23, 2012 - depending on who you talk to. Most Mayan code analysts believe the date translates to December 21, 2012.

According to the Maya code, there are 5 great cycles of time, of which 4 have already passed. Each cycle lasts 5,125 years, with a great destruction of the earth and every living creature happening at the end of them. Now, much of this information comes from how "experts" have translated the Mayan code, glyphs, and calendars.

Author Michael Coe, publisher of "The Maya" in 1966, was the first to report on the date December 21, 2012. In his book, he suggests that the code foretells the total destruction of the earth and mankind (the universe) when the present great cycle reaches the end of this thirteenth Baktun.

What is known is we now live in (near the end) of the fifth great cycle - the one in which the Mayan lived, only 500 to 4500 years ago. This cycle began in the year 3114 BC, and ends on December, 2012.

The driving force behind the doomsday "prophecy" is the Mayan Long Count Calendar. Having use three significant calendars, the Long Count Calendar is an extension of the 52-year Calendar Round. The problem is there isn't enough information to scientifically compliment the belief that something bad is going to happen when this great cycle ends.

But, as the Mayans were the astute astronomers of the day, there is plenty of accuracy in their astronomical predictions. For example, the earth will line up with the galactic plane on December 21, 2012 - something proven even today. This even happens once every 26,000 years.

But, other things are predicted (by doomsdayers) to happen along that day. Threats such as Planet X (also known as "Nibiru") entering our solar system, timewave zero, asteroid strikes, solar flares, and a devastating polar shift are all plausible methods for bringing in Armageddon.

Many books have been written on the subject 2012. And the 2012 movie that is scheduled for release in November 2009 will like fuel interest in doomsday 2012. One of the best books is 2012: Surviving the Mayan Calendar, which can be found on this website.

On the more safer contrary, a New Age following has emerged, suggesting mankind will have a choice of entering a time of peace and understanding. More of an astrological point of view, this spiritual understanding will supposedly entail a new era of positive living. This global consciousness shift, supported by New Age beliefs that have re-explained Mayan civilization and even confused modern humanity, is called Mayanism.

Academic professionals who have studied the Mayan culture beg to differ when it comes to earth's destruction by some heavenly force in December 2012. A simple explanation of "resetting" the calendar to Baktun 13.0.0.0.0, the beginning date of a new great cycle, is their belief.

Whether you believe something will happen on December 21, 2012 or not, it's probably prudent to become more educated on the subject. The Mayan were very aware of lunar, solar and galactic cycles and relied upon the sun God for continued survival. Much of their culture was destroyed by the Spanish during the Inquisition. But what wasn't destroyed foretold astronomical events that will scientifically occur.

PowerCum 09-22-2009 08:17 AM

Do they know the hour and the day exactly when that "unique" event will happen?

At least the y2k people knew the exact time the world would end. Now they don't give us hour nor day... I guess the predictions are getting more vague.

Next one will be "The world will come to an end... some day of these... run for the hills!"

Di Vito 09-22-2009 08:34 AM

I have spent 100's of hours working on this my self and have come up with 12-12-12

If you read the article she quoted you would know the answer... The winter solstice, December 21, 2012. There was nothing vague about that other than your reading skills.

Will anyone lend me $5000000 till Jan 2013?

Tom_PM 09-22-2009 09:04 AM

Personally, I think the Maya would have updated their calendar as they approached the end of the cycle. But it seems unfortunately that they deforested too much land in favor of crops, then experienced a great dust bowl and couldnt survive. Or whatever the theory of the day is about their end.

They didn't know that our Universe is ~13.7 Billion years old, so why should they be able to know when everything ends?

Interesting literature for sure. But like the Bible, there's much between the lines.
I don't think the planet will be destroyed but it's not unthinkable there could be a "reboot" in society/civilization and where the over greedy will draw the short end.
At least that was in the version I read that I bought in Mexico in a bookshop near the chitzen itza.

Its just a astrological end of the world, transit from one era in another, they predict bad era will finish ( might be think of this economic crises now ) and new better era will start. However lot of people read this thing different more dramatically.Plus Moon,Sun and Earth will be in the same line thats why they think maybe will be end of the world. For me as a read and understand everything is just symbolic no real end

Porko 09-22-2009 11:25 AM

100% fake.

It's all clever marketing for the 2012 movie.

Exactly.

They were very accurate in their measurments of the Earth's cycles around the sun. That's why it's interesting to note, there are not to my knowledge any clear cut predictions regarding 2012. Their calendar simply ends.

Imagine if you will a nuclear war were to break out suddenly at the end of this year, and wipe all the species off this earth. If intelligent life were to again evolve on Earth, or find Earth from somewhere else and find a fossilised 2009 calendar, they might also assume that Homo Sapiens were accurately able to predict their own demise! :winkwink:

You nailed it! :thumbsup

They were obsessed with time and like you said, it is very interesting to see the knowledge they possessed during such a primitive (for lack of a better term) state of mankind. The history channel did a great documentary on it: https://youtube.com/watch?v=WLx5ftYHJ0c (of course they had to play up the whole "doomsday" thing but still a good watch)!

Rochard 09-22-2009 03:58 PM

Yeah, right, they were able to predict this thousands of years in advance but didn't bother to tell us how it was going to happen....

Naughty Emma 09-22-2009 04:04 PM

I guess we will find out

Varius 09-22-2009 04:05 PM

I agree with you. It's interesting to read though.

bronco67 09-22-2009 04:26 PM

The Mayans believed in offering human sacrifices to the sun and moon gods, and they believed that their gods had created and destroyed the world several times over.

Nuff said.

That's the only part I agree about. They were extremely intelligent mathematicians and astronomers. Physics that could predict the end of the world? No.

They did not write anything about the end of the world it is the end of the last cycle of their calendar and the start of a new baktun, the 14th. I recommend reading and listening to some REAL research and not History channel sensationalism bullshit. Swedish researcher Carl Johan Calleman is a good start and here is a recent clip he made on youtube:
