The 47-year-old former NFL running back said Monday that he has signed a multi-fight contract with promoter Strikeforce. Walker will begin a 12-week training camp next month in San Jose, Calif.

How exactly is it a joke? He is an elite athlete that has excelled every time he tackled a new sport, including making the fucking Olympics in bobsledding. He's pushing 50 but it's not like they're going to put him in there against top fighters. Good for him and I hope he does well. Just because you are unsatisfied with your life doesn't mean you should shit on those that actually enjoy and live theirs...

If he isn't going to fight the best, then why fucking bother? So they can pair him up with a few cans that have not half of his athletic ability? That's pussy. This is a bad move on whatever fighter takes the fight with him. If the fighter beats him, he was supposed to and if he loses, he got beat by an old retired football player. Its a no-win situation. That's pussy? When you get off your couch and do something as ballsy as trying MMA for the first time at 48 then you can call someone else a pussy. You also don't put a guy in there with a top level fighter when he is making his MMA debut, and it's not like Strikeforce will be putting him in any main events. Strikeforce will make a mint because of his name. What's the point of putting him with cans? Why not match him up with someone with the same athletic ability? I am not saying put him with Fedor but man, many of these fighters in MMA have been doing this a long time waiting for their shot but because they did not play in the NFL or have name recognition will not get a shot because Herschel thinks he can beat all of the fighters in his division.

The same shit happened with Kimbo. They fed him guys he could and should beat until Seth sent him down for the nap. If Herschel wants to truly fight MMA, cut your teeth on the indie circuit like those that have paid their dues for a while.

Walker was my idol in junior high/HS. His work out plan forever was strictly 2000 push-ups/2000 sit-ups daily.. at least that's what he said at a football camp I attended.

That became my work out for about 8 months + running. Then I got into free weights(this was in 8th grade, mind you.. )

ah.. the days when I was a machine. damn beer and work.

With that said, I think he'll do okay. The guy is a horse.

Prerequisite for MMA in 2009

BJJ at least at the brown belt level(training at least 4 time a week).

Wrestling at a college level(take down/sprawl class at least three times a week).

Boxing/Muay Thai/Striking Arts at least eveyday(technique/light sparring) with one or two days of lives sparring.

MMA three time a week with all the ingredients and stir(80 to 60 percent punch power) full submissions.

Or be a physical specimen, ie Brock Lesnar who is good at one thing, but his physical attributes make him superior.

You don't go up against Fedor in your first Pro MMA fight. Calling someone a Pussy who is actually going into the cage to fight... Have you ever fought? When they close that door behind you, there's no turning back. Anyone who steps in to a cage to fight MMA is definitely not a Pussy. "The Man In The Arena" and all.

As for his training, he's a 6th Degree Blackbelt in Tae Kwo do, and has been training MMA for the past 8 years as a hobby. I personally would have fought before 8 years, but to each their own.

Another one...how can you sit on you couch and say that "MMA''s not for you"? Do you personally know Herschel Walker? Have you seen him train? Man I hate when people do that garbage. Do you know there are a ton of ex-NFL'ers on the current season of The Ultimate Fighter?

Herschel Walker is an elite athlete, and maybe MMA is for him, and maybe it isn't, and maybe he has a good showing or maybe he goes the "Johnnie Morton" route and gets KO'd. But when couch potatoes try and tell someone that is a "doer" and has succeeded at everything he has ever tried that they know something is not "for him" I get really annoyed...

I still feel its a young man's sport. My kid has been wrestling since he was 5 years old. He does BJJ, Muay Thai and kettlebells just for fun.

I can't see an athlete of yesteryear match up with an MMA fighter who has been practicing their whole lives.
