    FMyLife.com Business Model

Is anybody familiar with how social blog sites like FMyLife.com or TextsFromLastNight.com make money?

I have a good domain name that I think would occupy a previously untapped niche, that could fit the social blog business model. I am just not sure whether its worth it or not.

What are the bandwith costs like, considering it's mostly all text?
How much money can be made of ads, considering ad revenues have been on the decline?

I would appreciate any and all input.

    Thanks guys!

Nick - I run a site like that and the ad revenue on adsense etc SUCK BALLS. The only way to get them is to send newsletters with products... the cost of running a site like this is next to nothing so its pure profit basically.

Bandwidth costs are low... the thing is, if it's not immensely successful it's not going to net that much... however if it becomes naturally viral and everyone starts hitting the site then you've got something.

Bandwidth is super low and what's really great about user driven sites is... you don't have to DO anything. Well a minimal amount anyway...

Ads I would imagine along with brandability.

A lot of 'confession' sites have been around for ages. The key is to make sure they agree to giving you the rights. Then publish a book with the quotes. F My Life has one and so do a few others. There was one site where stay-at-home moms would submit confessions (i.e. I hate my kids today) and the owner published a book.

BradM, if it's not too much to ask, can you give me a ballpark figure on how much that kind of a site would cost to develop, and what kind of monthly revenues one can reasonably expect in the beginning. Obviously that depends on traffic but still...

          Thanks for the help!

Come up with a rough budget, go to a site like rentacoder.com or getafreelancer.com, and post a project that you want a fmlife clone and you will get developers bidding for the job.

You've gotta get the right hook though, otherwise it'll just languish.

Once it's big enough, do what tubes do. Make money from ad spots.
