Wow! Gmail now requires you to enter your cellphone for new accounts!
 

i tried to register a new gmail account and to my surprise it asked me for my cell phone number so it could text me a confirmation number for me to enter.

and there is no way around this, so if you dont have a cell phone you cant register a gmail account

Significant amount of spam email is being sent through gmail's servers. There are daily mailing limits in place, meaning people who are doing massive numbers of emails are in constant need of new accounts. Phone verification is a step to hinder the mass creation of accounts which have for a long time being created by the thousands for the purpose of spam...

i have registered an gmail account for my friend yesterday and everything was fine with no problems and no phone confirmations needed ... here in czech republic, europe

I just registered one after reading this thread. No phone was required. They did ask if I wanted to enter a phone so I could get mail on my phone, but that was after the account was set.

Maybe they're doing it on particular IP ranges or cities or something like that.

If they dont have your mobile number they cant track where you are. If they dont know where you are, they cant hit you with "Realsense"

Realsense (tm) is a new form of advertising where a guy runs up in front of you holding a big banner which has advertising on it. The advertising is based on the content of your emails so its well targetted. You can punch the guy in the face but then you lose your gmail account.

I think it is an IP pool thing. I got the message as well then I switched my IP and was able to sign up with no cellphone BS. Gmail has been taking a harder stance at spam. Now if you forward emails to another account or auto reply too much they will ban you and remove your accounts. Seen it on some other boards.

this news is so old it's been sent to one of obama's death panels.

Are you aware of the insane amount of spam Gmail accounts get? they are about to lose users because of it..

I never give me mobile number to any companies. I barely even give it to people I actually know.

i just signed up as a UK account and it did no such thing.

generally hits when you register multiple accounts...logging through cookie, ip, whoknows.
