Wow! Gmail now requires you to enter your cellphone for new accounts!

i tried to register a new gmail account and to my surprise it asked me for my cell phone number so it could text me a confirmation number for me to enter.

and there is no way around this, so if you dont have a cell phone you cant register a gmail account

wtf?

TrafficRush 09-13-2009 02:57 PM

they are gearing up for mobile promotion

Cyber Fucker 09-13-2009 03:00 PM

Really? If so then they gonna change it back very quick or they will start to loose...

PurrrsianPussyKat 09-13-2009 03:08 PM

Been that way for awhile now.

Jarmusch 09-13-2009 03:12 PM

And with this, google begins tracking every gmail user through GPS.

Do no evil.

"If you don't have a phone, you may want to ask a friend if you can use his or her number to receive a code. Also, if you know someone who already has a Gmail address, you can ask them to email an invitation to you."

Post an email address and I'll send you an invite.

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 09-13-2009 03:17 PM

Significant amount of spam email is being sent through gmail's servers. There are daily mailing limits in place, meaning people who are doing massive numbers of emails are in constant need of new accounts. Phone verification is a step to hinder the mass creation of accounts which have for a long time being created by the thousands for the purpose of spam...

katharos 09-13-2009 03:21 PM

i have registered an gmail account for my friend yesterday and everything was fine with no problems and no phone confirmations needed ... here in czech republic, europe

docputer 09-13-2009 03:30 PM

I just registered one after reading this thread. No phone was required. They did ask if I wanted to enter a phone so I could get mail on my phone, but that was after the account was set.

DonovanTrent 09-13-2009 03:32 PM

Maybe they're doing it on particular IP ranges or cities or something like that.

Vendot 09-13-2009 03:36 PM

If they dont have your mobile number they cant track where you are. If they dont know where you are, they cant hit you with "Realsense"

Realsense (tm) is a new form of advertising where a guy runs up in front of you holding a big banner which has advertising on it. The advertising is based on the content of your emails so its well targetted. You can punch the guy in the face but then you lose your gmail account.

Should have gotten your accounts when they were free. Rule of the web #1.

Babaganoosh 09-13-2009 04:30 PM

Linkwheel assholes fucking it up for everyone. :(

VeriSexy 09-13-2009 04:53 PM

This is old news

Horny Dude 09-13-2009 04:59 PM

I think it is an IP pool thing. I got the message as well then I switched my IP and was able to sign up with no cellphone BS. Gmail has been taking a harder stance at spam. Now if you forward emails to another account or auto reply too much they will ban you and remove your accounts. Seen it on some other boards.

Agent 488 09-13-2009 05:02 PM

Just so long as they don't make you sign up at various porn sites to get access.. That would of course be pushing it a bit.

Blingbaby 09-13-2009 10:26 PM

Are you aware of the insane amount of spam Gmail accounts get? they are about to lose users because of it..

Owner 09-13-2009 10:35 PM

Just made another account... no phone number, address, zip code or anything needed

Hentaikid 09-14-2009 03:35 AM

You could always opt out from google altogether

Elixir 09-14-2009 03:43 AM

I never give me mobile number to any companies. I barely even give it to people I actually know.
