9-11 reality check - How many people die a day of _________ ?
 

Yes, we all agree it was a very dark day for America, and a sad day for us all. However, lets keep it in perspective and not lose touch with reality. There are many, many other things that also deserve your attention.

About 822 people a day die from obesity.

About 24,000 people die a day of world hunger.

Almost 16,000 children die a day from hunger

Around 1479 people die from cancer a day and 3483 new people are diagnosed with it.

Around 4000 people die a day from having a stroke.

Globally, around 8500 die a day due to an AIDS related death.

Over 100 Iraqi civilians die a day, courtesy of the US military.

In the USA, every 12 minutes, one person dies because of a car accident.

Every 1 second, someone dies from either murder or suicide. That's 1440 a day.

This list could go on forever. Yet none of these deaths get anywhere near the same amount of press that 9-11 does, if any press at all. :(

If you have any stats for deaths per day, please share.

Please don't tell me you are comparing that list with the tragedy of 9-11.

But seriously, there is a huge difference and to start comparing numbers like this is unwise. You can try and compare children killed each day by attacks vs. swine flu - doing comparison's totally eliminates the horror that is being the attacks on kids. It's more than just numbers

To trivialize the death of ANYONE for the sake of keeping a supposed grasp on reality is asinine. Intelligent people see the tragedy in any and all of the things you listed, claiming to be no more important than one or the other.

The key difference however? Those lives were lost in an attack against US citizens by a foreign body or organization.
All life is precious but tragedy is remembered, defined, and gauged by the circumstances that surround it.

The reality is - almost all these deaths can be prevented...in one way or another.

That's the biggest tragedy.

Comparing the attention given to deaths on 9/11 to deaths by other causes doesn't serve a purpose that I can see.

First of all... Can you read? Any of you? I said there are many other issues that also deserver attention, where more people are dying and it can be prevented. Read my first sentence 7 or 8 times until you understand the words within it. Then I was asking for other stats. Honestly, try understanding the words you read before you post.

However, since so many of you got your panties in a buch, 9-11 is just ONE DAY where Americans finally get to know what it feels like to be an Iraqi. Iraqi has 9-11 every day, thanks to the United States. :( Imagine if this happened every day here. Every day, in several cities, over nothing. :(

9/11 was awful. But going over it every year isn't helping. I feel that it's time to let people remember in their own way. IE we will all think about it and remember, but not do the memorial and bump the thread every year. I also think that Brits need to let the 7/7 bombings go.

This sounds awful and un-caring - it's not. I walked next to an IRA bomb less than hour before it went off so I know what terrorism can do. That shit me up for a long time. I also lost a friend in a nail bombing that was targetted at a London gay bar. Neither of these are as "big" as 9/11 but the priniciple is the same. By going over it so often, we are spreading fear and letting terroists interfere with out lives.
