How about something that converts far better than IM ads? Offer something to your surfer that they probably have never seen before.

Desktop Strippers - A stripper pops in from the corner as the IM ad does (but with a transparent background) and dances around on the screen.

I have had much higher conversions using this over IM ads. :thumbsup
