PHOENIX (AP) - Big Surf water park, known for its man-made waves for the past 40 years, will close at the end of the day Monday and officials say its future is unclear. Golfland Entertainment Inc. has operated the park since 1991 and is giving up its lease on the Tempe facility to concentrate on newer parks in Arizona and California. Big Surf's 2.5-million-gallon wave pool is 1 of the largest in the world. The park's innovative wave machine produced five- to six-foot waves that could be ridden with a conventional surfboard. The 12.5-acre site opened in 1969 and hosted numerous concerts in the 1970s including shows by Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart and Chicago. |
So it's just closing? Isn't it popular any longer?

Interesting....if it stays closed that is a lot of water that can be used someplace else :)

Yeah I read that yesterday. Doesn't say its closing for good, just that its losing its management company. I'm sure it will gain new mgmt and continue on. I went there dozens of times as a kid, fun memories.
