One of the most underrated horror films of all time

If you're looking for an above average horror film and don't mind watching one that is about a decade old, I highly recommend this one. Personally I dislike vampire movies, but this story is very original and has some creepy fucking parts. It's a bit long, and some parts may seem dull, but as far as horror movies go, it's pretty damn good. :thumbsup

its ok and they had a great series of books to work from. just to bad latter on in the series. i know anne rice took out a full page commentary in the new york times i think dissing the movie and more so the use of tom cruise. she latter took it back, i think she got her arm twisted by her publisher. though her compaints were justified for the most part. unlike her i did feel that cruise could play lestat but she was very much against it.

i thought he could portray him but the cast was indeed the clusterfuck. aside from using kirsten dunst the rest was a piss poor idea and just about insured that the rest of the novels if given the chance to become films would fail. all of the books tell a great and full story. having cruise, pitt, and such in their assured that they would not stick around for more. hell they even had to use banderas and slater in it. talk about no foward thinking like they did in harry potter, lord of the rings, etc.

Wasn't aware of that. Thanks for the info.

You're right. However, when great horror movies are brought it this movie is almost never mentioned.

I am a huge horror movie and vampire genre fan. I also am a huge fan of the books. The movies were good on their own but really cannot live up to the books, which is par for the course. I would never consider Interview with a Vampire a true horror movie.
You should check out Near Dark.

I've read the entire series but I'm not that big of an Anne Rice fan... I think her pacing is a bit off especially when she spends about 10 pages describing something like curtains... a paragraph at most is good enough for me, I get the vibe you're going for I don't need a chapter on the curtains, lol...

I'd also like to throw in another underrated horror movie suggestion:

Cube

It's a lower budget film but done amazingly well. Don't bother with the sequels but definitely check out the original if you're a horror movie fan ;)

seeandsee 08-27-2009 07:54 AM

that is a good movie!

To be fair, Interview with a vampire is more of a drama than it is a horror movie. :2 cents:

Ehj ..........

Deesnuts 08-27-2009 10:07 AM

John-ACWM 08-27-2009 10:12 AM

brand0n 08-27-2009 10:14 AM

i wouldnt really say it was horror.. more drama really with a splash of horror

The Ghost 08-27-2009 10:39 AM

It was a pretty good flick for the time, and IMO the casting was good. Christian Slater, Brad Pitt & Tom Cruise... it was a teenage girls wet dream of A list hunks.

tranza 08-27-2009 10:43 AM

Classic one...fucking good movie!

I'm a fan of Bram Stokers Dracula.

this one was pretty good too!!

J. Falcon 08-27-2009 11:14 AM

I thought there were some parts in it that were quite horrific.

bronco67 08-27-2009 11:16 AM

Also owns the distinction of being Kirsten Dunst's first movie....

bronco67 08-27-2009 11:20 AM

If you want to talk underrated, then we should mention The Descent".

as i said above in piss poor english that is where we disagree. yeah they did pull of the acting job, well they did not let lestat be as writen personality wise but that was ok. the story itself is pretty timeless. the casting did kill it though. one would hope that they would at least of gotten to the queen of the damned if not the rest of them. though queen would of been a good end point if they HAD to not do full series.

no damn way were they getting cruise to stick around for everything though. they had a chance to have a cash cow series wise. they also had rice who also made a good screen writter so for the most part the fans would not be upset. usually you can only dream of having such a series to produce films from. however this would only work if at very least whomever was casted as lestat could of been and was locked in for all of the movies. would help if armand and louis also were locked in.

they then could of done interview, vampire lestat, queen, body thief, memnoch, armand, merric, blood & gold, blackwood, and blood canticle.
that is a shit load of possible movies all with very devoted fans. plus vampire flicks, especially those built around rice's type of vampire which everyone steals are super popular.
