There is not going to be a COLA for Social Security
 

...recipients next year and in addition the premiums for the Medi Care presription drug program is going to go up.

Not all Grandmas and Grandpas are poor but many...if not most...are so they will have to tighten the purse strings and do without something. Though I have not read anything about it yet...this may also mean the military will not get a COLA next year.

The COLA never keeps up with the actual cost of living in the first place.

The more I think about this the more it irritates me. The Congress can spend trillions of dollars...on this and on that...but no money for the old people...many of whom already have to make a choice between food and paying for their medicines.

cola is a cost of living adjustment but since there have been no inflation, why should they get more?
btw, not all SS is for old people, lots of people with disabilities and other "social problems" receive SS.

1) MOST of the federal budget is already spent on seniors vis a vis social security and medicare, so the idea that congress is spending trillions on this and that and nothing for seniors is flat out stupidity.

2) Seniors don't have to choose between food and medicine. Perhaps you missed it but 6 years ago Medicare part D was created, it covers prescription drugs for seniors.

3) Increases in social security are automatically calculated by a formula that was made law a long time ago. This year's congress or last year's congress has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not social security checks will go up next year.

4) Is it painful being so stupid? Or is ignorance truly bliss?

Social Security is total fucking bullshit... well lets just say it isn't the house that Roosevelt built that is for sure. Blame Johnson or the Vietnam war, hell hippies too if you want, but the fact remains that Social Security is now nothing more than ANOTHER way for the government to take your money and do with as they please. I like to call it the government cookie jar.

As for the republicans? What did Bush do in his first year of office? He completely drained the Social Security surplus. Just like almost every administration has since 1968.

But the people say it works... There are people collecting it. YEAH. Directly from the paychecks of those people who are still forking it over. Social Security no longer saves the money. They hit their cap (payouts to those collecting ss checks) and the Government spends the rest or technically they "borrow" the money.

Just another scam to part good people from their money. It was a good idea but like most good ideas someone had to corrupt it and destroy it.

You are correct...in that SS an Medicare is a major portion of the Federal budget.

I am also fully aware that Medicare will now pay for most prescription drugs...but I am also fully aware that it does not pay for all drugs and/or in the dosages recommended by a doctor...so these additional costs are out of the pockets of the SS recipient...some of whom receive a few hundred dollars per month and would not even survive if it were not for food cupboards.

I am also aware that SS recipients have withheld from their SS checks a premium for Medicare coverage and as I stated the premium for the prescription drug program is going up.

I am aware that a formula is used to calculate what the COLA amount should be if a COLA is to be allowel and I am aware that a COLA can be denied.

I also am aware that next year...once again...the aged that already receive very little in SS payments...will once again have to tighten their purse strings...and make decisions between food and medicine...staying cool or suffering with the heat...staying warm or suffering with the cold etc. etc. etc.

And people that know shit know that those are paid for IN FULL because of the FICA taxes. At least until 2016. If you got rid of SS and Medicare today and of course then you got rid of the FICA tax because it would no longer be necesary, guess what, you'd have the SAME deficit.

The vast majority of people that get SS now get far much more than they ever paid in. Meanwhile people my age and younger( I'm 40) will be lucky to break even.

Originally...when the age to receive SS was set at 65...the average recipient lived for 18 months...but now the average recipient is living for about seven years (I think 7 is correct...I may be wrong) and that is why some time ago the age has been increased to 67 for those born after x date (I am not sure but you probably fall into the 67 age bracket) and there is talk of raising the age even higher and I have no doubt in my mind that it will be raised higher and higher as time goes by.

Originally SS was not designed to be ones retirement but was designed to be a supplement to ones retirement and/or savings. Over the years this original idea has been changed and many people now rely upon it as being their only source of retirement...and in addition to be their only source of medical coverage and drug coverage since medicare and medicaid came into being.

SS is rife with problems and may ultimately fall under its own weight. My irritation is with an administration and congress that can spend trillions..."bailing out" corporate entities and they in turn give out multi million dollar bonuses...and their people fly around in coporate jets...as does members of Congress...while some aged and disabled...are literally barely surviving...are expected to just tighten the purse strings more than they already have been doing.
