The entertainment value so far is priceless.

DonovanTrent 08-23-2009 11:11 AM

There are merits to this. People buy new energy-efficient appliances (spurs the economy a bit, increases consumer spending, keeps the wheel turning) and the rebates get in their hands right at Christmas shopping season (jumpstarts the most important buying season). I'm ok with it.

GatorB 08-23-2009 11:11 AM

I'm sure some neo-con will have an issue with this. I mean stimulating the economy reducing greenhouse gasses and the consumer saving on his electric bill. Oh my what a disaster!

LiveDose 08-23-2009 11:11 AM

Just watch, the biggest give aways are going to come right before elction season.

.. not withstanding the fridge's death panels ...

nation-x 08-23-2009 11:16 AM

It's such a silly program that every state in the union has applied for the funds and will receive an average of $19M each. I was listening to a couple of energy experts talk about it on NPR (All Things Considered) yesterday and they said $300M wasn't enough but that the program would save enough energy to power NYC for a week. In addition, it will bring back a good number of jobs and help struggling suppliers.

The Cash for Clunkers program has actually greatly stimulated the economies in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania (as well as other areas) because they are calling back 30% of laid off workers at the big 3 and have reopened a bunch of plants. The President of the Steel Workers Union said it has been the best thing to happen to that sector in years and will help spurn alot of development... like planting a seed and watching a plant grow... we will see what happens.

Fridge Nazis! It's the slippery slope to fascism!

Hopefully the Chinese can keep lending us money for these programs!

From the article it says the money is from the stimulus money already passed...so the money is already there..no need to lend us more money.

From the second paragraph of the article... :)

The money is part of the broader economic stimulus bill passed earlier this year.

Mr. Cool Ice 08-23-2009 01:11 PM

Only spending 300 million on it. Nothing better could be done with that money.

RobertD 08-23-2009 01:18 PM

They can have my fridge when they pry it from my cold dead fingers.

kane 08-23-2009 01:19 PM

Haven't they been doing something like this for years? I seem to remember that people have gotten tax breaks in the past when buying energy efficiency appliances. I know it isn't the same as an instant rebate, but same idea.

The Energy Star program gives federal tax credits for energy efficiency. energystar(dot)gov I think.

I don't think it's been done on a large federal scale. A lot of communities do it though. I bought a new dryer about three years ago and the city of San Diego was going to give me a $250 rebate if I bought a particular model.

Cash for hookers & blow!

ToplistBlog_Com 08-23-2009 01:39 PM

Sounds like it could do some good. I guess we'll have to wait and see how it does.

See this is what people don't get. And I'm not sure why people here that are supposedly business people don't get. The stimulus plan makes money. peole act as if the money spent won't come back. it will and then some. Not sure wh this is hard to get. Ok people here run businesses right? Do you do it for FREE? No you spend money? WHY? Because that money eventually makes even more money. Same type thing. If you never spent the initial money you wouldn't make shit.

Right. As a business, you take loans. And someday you have to pay those loans back.

Yes, it's so obvious and of course it will work. There is no merit to any opposing point of view. Stimulus has been tried before, i.e. in Japan. It didn't work. When you artificially tinker with things no one knows what the outcome will be. Things have to be done yes. Not everyone agrees with the methods. Is that so hard to understand?

So even though you think you are brilliant and the smartest guy in the room that's simply your opinion.

nation-x 08-23-2009 02:41 PM

You do realize that we don't actually take "loans" from anyone, right? It's not like the govt asks the chinese" Hey... you got any cheese, bro? I gotsa get sum new shoos!".

What actually happens is that they issue Treasury securities that get traded on the secondary market. Even though the US Treasury has issued alot of securities... maybe you should educate yourself as to what exactly they are and what economic principles make them a sure bet for the Federal Reserve.

Yeah, but "we get loans from the Chinese" fires people up better.

StinkyPink 08-23-2009 02:53 PM

This sucks... I just bought a brand new Kenmore in March.

Please refrain from interjecting any reality into GFY threads in the future. :winkwink:

Another ultra lib trying to sound smart. It's a matter of speech and one used in all corners of the media to put things in terms that most people can understand.

I am aware of how the system works. Do you really believe the words coming out of your mouth. There are no sure bets. Not without artificial manipulation in some cases. Economic principles are one thing economic reality is completely different. I'm sure you've impressed some of the people on this board still living with mom and dad with your teaser. Why don't you educate me...

Phallus Fondue 08-23-2009 05:06 PM

no trade in required, can be piggybacked onto other rebates, and good for several kitchen appliances. that helps more and gives a tiny bit more incentive but not much. good enough that i think i will wait until then for the new fridge and dishwasher. we already replaced the oven so nothing there and i can not think of any other appliances.
hopefully the windows credit will still be in effect latter this year. just wish i had enough cash to let the wife purchase a house under the first time home buyers program to get that rebate too.

Just to be clear, I didn't post this as a whinny ass complaint. I'm all for it and think it's a great move. It won't have the $$$ impact that CARS did but it's one more small step in the right direction. The US will prevail.

I am not an "ultra lib"... it's funny to me when people call me that because if I post a diary on DailyKos they always accuse me of being a right winger... :2 cents:
