Best social network software?

I want to make a list of them, I know about Drupal and Joomla, what else is out there, I have a client that wants to build a social networking site

Porn Grounds 08-19-2009 03:54 PM

phpfox isn't bad. A lot can be done with it.

CunningStunt 08-19-2009 03:57 PM

I'd hire a programmer to write it from the ground up. That way it's a) a lot harder for a competitor to copy it b) you get everything exactly how you want it

That's what I did anyway. :2 cents:

wordpress mu + buddypress seems pretty powerful - i haven't tried it out yet, but wordpress products are usually pretty awesome.

I'm looking into the same thing actually...I'm actually REALLY curious what they use at www.aionsource.com (part of the curse network of gaming sites) - its 99% prolly custom though :(

Yeah, that appears to be the only viable option. Everything out there has weird bugs or just plain suck.

Not always easy to find a good coder man. I have been looking to pump $10k+ over 2 years into a social/portal/chat project. Most coders do not want a long term commitment, are already over committed, want to bring in a 'team' of people (like Indians and Pakis) or just not interested in hard work.

Easier said then done.

Joomla and JomSocial - http://jomsocial.com

StinkyPink 08-19-2009 06:32 PM

PHPfox is nice, and they have been adding new features and working out the kinks for a long time. Should be very stable now, easily customizable and MANY add-ons both free and paid. Good luck.

HorseShit 08-19-2009 06:33 PM

For a readily available solution SocialEngine all the way.

I could hook you up with someone who's done all that on one of my sites. Unfortunately he programs in asp.net, and charges $100 per hour :)

Sorry, bump Vendzilla.

Looking at all these and a different idea someone told me, I'll know in a week what we're using

Mr Pheer 08-20-2009 01:10 AM

Whatever you do, stay away from that Dolphin/Orca garbage.

gwidomains 08-20-2009 06:47 AM

get your own coded --- the problem is not a lack of features -- but too many features with most services.

Too many features is a problem, b/c none of them work well and worse, they can not scale.

tranza 08-20-2009 07:53 AM

Google it bro! :thumbsup

sgadmin 08-20-2009 08:19 AM

Maybe elgg.org is useful to you.

Agreed.

I bought a license to that complete garbage. What a waste.

They gave me a free full boat unlimited license to it and I wouldn't suggest it to my worst enemy lol.
The sad thing is it has every feature you'd ever need but the code is some of the most convoluted, nonsensical and just plain poorly done of any CMS I have investigated.
On top of that it just doesn't work without glitches in virtually every feature.

DateDoc 08-20-2009 10:06 AM

Just a heads up on SocialEngine - there are supposed to be some massive changes coming to it (so they say). Typically license owners have been able to upgrade to major platform changes for a small fee. I think when they went from v2 to v3 it was $50. Incremental changes, like v2.01 on up to v2.83, were free and incremental changes within v3 have been free too. They are on v3.17 now so the massive changes being v4 would either seem premature or a ways off.

FirstI was getting something new developed, then the client turned into an asshole and fired the coder, then I told him to fuck off, I made my own to play with using phpfox, it's pretty easy to use and upgrade.
I have dolphin on another site and it was garbage

Barefootsies 11-27-2009 10:59 AM

bumparooski for the answer.
:winkwink:

Jman 11-27-2009 11:12 AM

I'd go with phpfox 110%, I have been running a french musique social network using phpfox and it is great.

Stay the hell away from Joomla...

Just out of curiosity, which version of Dolphin did you try? everything up to 6.16. was a piece of shit, I agree. They released V7 a couple of weeks ago as a release candidate, and v7RC2 was just released today. All new database structure, a shit load of new features, and so far I haven't had many problems with it at all.

Anyone who's had a crappy experience with Dolphin before should give it another go with the latest release, it's like a whole new platform. I haven't tried all the plug-ins and shit yet (orca, Ray, etc), but the base script like I said, so far, it's a welcome update and a great script.

I was about to switch to Social Engine until I tried the latest Dolphin release... Just my $.02...

Let it run for a month, then get back to us, I got hacked and it wasn't fun, so I'm not going to jump back on because of a new release

cambaby 11-27-2009 04:29 PM

Years ago I programmed my own and sold off the rights to it. Not that hard and can do so much more customization if you find a good programmer.

goldfish 11-27-2009 05:05 PM

I have 2 phpfox sites, it works.
