I think they did it on purpose - publicity stunt.

They got a shitload of PR from it and they got everyone going to their site too see and since they couldn't buy it they'd most likely end up buying something. Great sales tactic.

Even if there was a class action which isn't likely they'd still make way more from the 5 million people that went to see what it was all about.
