Best John Hughes character?

We know he has died..let us that consider ourselves fans talk about his work. I think that part of what made the films of John Hughes stand out were the characters. So, who was your favourite John Hughes character?

My vote goes to Duckie from Pretty In Pink. When I think 80's cinema he almost always pops in my head. Everybody should have a Duckie figure in their life at some point..somebody that has it that bad for you. Plus, if you look at him he is in many ways the prototype to Ferris ..as if Ferris is what Duckie thinks he is but isn't.

Who gets your vote?

ewwwwwww....... Jon Cryer - the poor man's Mathew Broderick.

Ferris Bueller is his best character.

No Duckie = No Ferris

And Jon Cryer was rubbish in everything else...but he was Duckie so I forgive him.

I grew up on Planes, Trains and Automobiles so I'd have to go with Del Griffith, done by the late great John Candy (how's this for feeling old: he died over 15 YEARS ago!). Very hilarious but equally heartfelt endearing character and even more so considering the actor that played him died at an early age.

The entire cast of The Breakfast Club. He hit every high school clique right on the head when he made that flick.

John Bender. Judd Nelson is fucking harsh!

CurrentlySober 08-07-2009 02:16 AM

Yup. Gotta be John Bender :)

Mutt 08-07-2009 02:26 AM

it's who's the best character not which character you wanted to be or thought you were.

everybody claims they were Bender - suuuuuuure you were.

Sarah_Jayne 08-07-2009 02:54 AM

Even Bender didn't really want to be Bender.

You really love Duckie, great character but Ferris Bueller is far and away my favorite character. The coolest kid in school that never even went to school.

Bingo. I actually took a group discussion class in college in which we studied the characters in this movie for the whole semester.

Someone already mentioned Long Duck Dong. He's my #2.

Ferris Bueller will always be my favorite. I tried to get my girl to name our son Ferris, but that didn't fly.

I totally would have done that. In fact, I would have given you extra sex for suggesting it.

My husband hasn't even seen Ferris and keeps saying he doesn't want to either. I tell him that if I knew that before we got together it would have been a deal breaker.

Motherfucking Long Duck Dong! And all of the mutants from weird science (even though they're pretty much from the Road Warrior)

I have to admit that Weird Science doesn't hold up that much over time as the others do for me.

Then, there are other Hughes films that people barely even mention these days that I loved - Some Kind Of Wonderful, for example.
