thats hardy racist.

in the uk for many years people have refered to chinease people as yellow, as a simple term.

these days people do not.

but how different is that to people calling somone black?

mikeyddddd 07-31-2009 06:23 PM

Red and Yellow, Black and White
They're all precious in His sight.

Having many Asian people in my family, ranging from Vietnamese, to Korean, while ignorant white folk may use "yellow" to describe them, they hardly like the term. Id never refer to an Asian family member as a "Yellow Guy" at the dinner table.

And I would not call my Korean relatives yellow or my Mexican relatives brown (well, maybe my DIL), but if they want to joke about it who am I to tell them to stop?

I've heard people before say calling someone "yellow" was racist... That's why I was asking what was the origin of the expression... If say chinese or japanese people have been known to be coward at some point in time, it could have originated from there... From a google search I did, apparently not...

Well, I remember Westerns when they would call someone a yellow bellied coward, or someone might have a yellow streak.

I also remember movies that depicted the railroads being built and when the Chinese came in to assist they were called yellow skinned just like Indians were considered redskins.

They were not white so they had to be some color I guess.

Yes if you apply the same guide lines. But in todays PC environment calling a white guy whitey, honkey or racist it's fine.

ProG 07-31-2009 08:20 PM

its not uncommon... like an Asian guy who is called a twinkie.. yellow on the outside, white in the middle :1orglaugh

Its not that its racist. Its just that certain terms were used in the past in a derogatory way, so they are no longer politically correct. Yellow, Chinaman, Oriental, Slant eye, Negro, Brown skin, Redskin, Red man; while these terms are not harsh, they were all used at one time or another in a derogatory way. The term "Black" and "White" were never used negatively, so it's not considered racist now.

burntfilm 07-31-2009 08:30 PM

around here that's a 1950's type term...
