jeez, bandwidth rapage
so i am going to get a limiter installed for the daily transfer of members this way i will wake up and wont see that some member has transfered 16 gigs in 8 hours and our site is 4 gigs..... this shit is so annoying and hard to monitor as there are other things that i am doing.... now what would be a good limit to set for the day for these members? i was thinking around 500mb a day... think that is good or to much or to less?:helpme

A gig per day is reasonable, although I think that you should always be careful with it. In the end, it could hurt retention...

16 gigs? did he share his password with a few buddies?
|
i would never put such a limit on my members area.
the bandwidth used in the members area is peanuts compared to all our other costs. |
bandwidth should be your smallest expense, or one of your smallest expenses.
but regardless, keep in mind that if you present a surfer with a page saying "You've downloaded too much!" they're going to be much more likely to call the bank and have a chargeback issued. you're probably best off trying to figure out a way to throttle kbits/s somehow. there's no good way to do this in Apache, unfortunately. |

They paid for access right?
16GB isn't much bandwidth. |
whoops double post..
yeah i know 16 gigs is not that much.... just sort of a pet peeve i guess but still eeerrrrr |
i wouldn't worry about it too much. in addition to what quiet stated, b/w is dirt cheap nowadays. there are guys burning way more than that on galleries, and their surfers haven't even been nice enough to fork out the plastic

"16GB isn't much bandwidth."
Thats a pretty fucking big amount for one member to use. Just cancel the guy. Hes obviously doing something shady. |
Ummm, couple comments here.
1) Passwd protection. Your paysite does have protection right? So one username cant be shared by 30 people? 2) You can limit download speeds in apache, but most available apache mod's out there need a little tweakin before they will actually work. 3) 16gb isnt really much. I am sure that cost you less then $20 :P I guess if you have really slim margins, it can knock into profits... |
