LOL -- the number one tip for avoiding luggage fees is.... (drum roll)

1. Bring less

Now that is some high end journalistic work.

I've yet to actually read a good travel tip. They are all common sense and in most cases not really 'tips' but just regurgitation of airline material, never a real tip that an average traveler could use.

For example, US Airways exempts all of its frequent fliers, passengers traveling to and from Europe or Asia, Star Alliance Silver and Gold status members, unaccompanied minors, first-class passengers and active duty military.
There's a great solution, fly first class all the time and you'll never pay for checked baggage. Don't mind the fare difference ;)

Grow a beard, dress like a Saudi, then go to the airport and look tough - you get FREE one way ticket to Guantanamo Bay!!!

MichaelP 07-30-2009 02:11 PM

Wow, Txs for the tips Julius :thumbsup

Unfortunately Southwest doesn't fly to all the main US cities. It'd be nice if they could get me to Newark, Atlanta, Miami and some other large hubs to catch flights internationally.

Quite right. And you should only need one pair of trousers for the entire trip as well :-)
