webhosting companies

Are all of these hosts that start up all the time building and running their own datacenters or are they colocating or something like that and running it from another location?

Just curious.

Keev 12-04-2002 01:04 PM

Most colocate to other already established datacenters untill there needs justify building there own.

BSleazy 12-05-2002 09:23 PM

Hey all you hosts that hang around here. Why don't you share if you colocate or have your own datacenter.

So you're asking Hosting companies to justify themselves to you? LOL

L0stMind 12-05-2002 09:44 PM

Most co-locate.

We do.

Reasoning is simple as hell - why spend millions to build a proper data center when there are soo many empty ones built already?

If a host spends a shitload of $$ on a data center then they have to pass that cost off on the client... with a profit of $0.25 per GB a host would have to sell more bandwidth then is currently consumed by the entire adult industry to make their $$ back within any reasonable timeframe :)

Calm down killer...just a question which has nothing to do with justifying anything

LOL do you know how much it costs to build a datacenter?

L0stMind 12-05-2002 09:50 PM

I already tried to tell him... even a small data center costs into the millions...

$0.10 on the dollar if you buy one that has gone belly up! There are TONS of them EVERYWHERE!

You can build a small data center the proper way (3,000sf) for about $300k-$400,000.00 depending on the location and "features".

I miss the hosting industry so when I get going again I will colo in a data center. It is much cheaper!

^R3K^ 12-05-2002 10:14 PM

most hosting Co. in this biz colo...

Check out NatNet, who has its own DataCenter.

Jeffery 12-05-2002 10:21 PM

I'd venture to say 99% of the hosting providers colocate or put their servers in an office building, as opposed to a data center.

A data center when conventionally thought of (especially on this board) means waterless fire suppression systems, high-tech security, raised flooring, large scale cooling systems, large scale battery systems/generators, and 24-hour techs.

Someone can also call a datacenter -- just a room tiled up and build up with racks and ran some fiber into it -- and using the word "datacenter" is every bit as accurate.

(This post came below NationalNet, I'm definitely not meaning to aim that at you, I'm very respectful of your company)

XXXstorage Jeff no offence taken, our DataCenter is state of art and we welcome anyone to come check us out. as a matter of fact any one who is in the Atlanta area is incouraged to visit us.

We lease a ton of space at this facility. Looking at our lease bill every month, I would like to say we own it, but alas.. we do not.

Outsourcing at a reputable facility is the way to go.

If your ever in the Santa Clara area, and want a tour - hit me up.

Here are some pics - judge for yourself.
