My trusty laptop finally died after 7 years...

Sad, but true. My Toshiba laptop ground to a halt the other night - after seven years of 24/7.

I suspect it might be the motherboard.

Luckily I have the newer Acer laptop as backup, but sucks usin' Vista on it. :(

I have vista on a desktop at work, and it's really not that bad.

7 years is a long time for a laptop, they don't make 'em like that anymore.

sorry to hear, it's hard to give up on an old comfortable machine

bbobby86 07-29-2009 01:05 AM

Why such a creative artist as yourself isn't using a Mac is beyond me.

I know the feeling. I have an old Acer laptop with a 17" screen that I use when travelling. It must be some 6 - 7 years old now and still works ok apart from a few creaks here and there. Was a terrific workhorse.

Sarah_Jayne 07-29-2009 02:52 AM

I ended up taking Vista off my computers and am back to XP. Hated it.

SilentKnight 07-29-2009 07:02 AM

I have to agree - 7 years was a long time, considering the use its had.

No, we didn't lose anything - thankfully (other than a few minor things that weren't really important). I keep everything backed up on two external western digital drives.

As for why I don't use a Mac - I've just always been a dyed-in-the-wool PC person. It's what I know, and it's what works for me. After nineteen years of using PCs I don't have the inclination to switch at this point in the game.

I'm on an Acer Aspire laptop for now - only has a few hours runtime on it. And the wife just bought a new Toshiba Satellite laptop a few days ago - she's hoping to have the same luck with it as my old Toshiba.

Ah well, I'll take the old one into the shop and see what the damage to the wallet is to have it fixed.

My wife thinks it committed suicide over jealousy of the new Toshiba she'd brought home. :1orglaugh

I suspect Bill Gates learned it was still running XP and nuked it remotely.

Manowar 07-29-2009 07:35 AM

i usually give my laptops life cycles of about 3 years max then replace them... they get damn nearly dead in that time anyway

3 years was typical for me in the past with desktop systems.

At the moment we've got a total of six systems in the house and office (desktop and laptops combined).

Time for a garage sale. :1orglaugh
