Networks Solutions notified 4,343 of its nearly 10,000 e-commerce merchant customers on Friday about the breach. It affects 573,928 cardholders whose name, address, and credit card number were exposed between March 12 and June 8, said Susan Wade, a spokeswoman for Network Solutions.

Mysterious code was discovered in early June on servers hosting e-commerce customer sites during routine maintenance, she said. The company called in a third-party forensics team to help with the investigation, and the team was able to crack some of the code on July 13, determining that it could be related to credit card data, she added.

Credit card transactions were intentionally diverted by an unknown source from certain Network Solutions servers to servers outside, Network Solutions wrote in an e-mail to merchant customers

Let the cardbanging begin....

You have NO idea of how many credit cards get stolen.

I am involved with the law on this one and see the amounts of stolen databases coming through, it's ridiculous.

There was an instance where a credit card processor and several hackers arranged a deal to bill a 100k+ database for under $1 -- and they got away with it! Nobody reported the transaction as it was masked as some default crap you see every day on your statements if you're a frequent cc user.

The case was surfaced 2 years later after that database got to a public filesharing server.

Seriously, get yourself a virtual visa card, use it for a month and get another one.

:2 cents:

I'd never use a real credit card.

I have two debitcards for that reason

One is my Epassporte that I use online, and the other is a business card I use for business related travels.

I'm sorry if this is evident to some, but I don't have a clue, so: anyone know which large sites used that payment processor?

About a month ago someone tried to make a $1 charge to my CC online via paypal (a one time transaction).
I am enrolled in a service which automatically texts me when I use my CC online.
Needless to say I reported it immediately and put the kabosh on the thieves.
Sons of bitches....

credit cards are stolen all the time. if you know your rights as a consumer and check your things daily you can get it taken care of immediatley. most of those people dont have the actual card but just a number. so things they purchase are usually ordered online or by phone. just call the cc company and they stop the transaction right away. the company that sent the stuff out will have it shipped back immediately. you're info is stored on the strip, im not quite sure but if you have a card reader it will give all that info if you swipe it through, it fits in the palm of your hand and can be put at gas station pumps, as well restaurant workers can have them as well. check statements daily, best advice i can give. you will have a new card in no time.

side note. i know you hate credit cards being stolen, what about all the free porn out there? maybe we should just stop selling it when it is there for free for the taking? anyone?

debit cards are the worst to get stolen. I only use my debit card when I absolutely have to. Otherwise I use my Amex all the time.

C-Luv 07-28-2009 01:42 PM

Oh, that is horrible.

Once your debit card gets compromised you will learn fast that you should get a couple of credit cards.

V_RocKs 07-28-2009 04:31 PM

Debit cards = you are shit out of luck when someone uses them.
Credit cards = you have the transaction reversed and the store is shit out of luck.

papill0n 07-28-2009 04:45 PM

only half a million cards compromised hey :Oh crap

Machete_ 07-28-2009 04:49 PM

When I say "Debit card" - I mean my VisaCard (called a "Visa Dankort" here) that is tied to my accont with money in it. Its not a credit account.

The way the rules are here in Denmark, It's the banks problem if there is a charge to my account that aint mine. If someone charge $1000 to my account, all I need to do is call the bank and tell them that aint my charge, and they need to prove me wrong (roughly simplified, but it gives you a idea how it works)

I dont know how the debit/credit cards work in the US.

kristin 07-28-2009 04:49 PM

Damn ... that's crazy.
