Nat Net review - first impressions
So if you didn't see my "does Nat Net suck?" thread, I'll explain what I'm up to. Nat Net persuaded me to host with them after I asked about their downtime. They agreed to do a deal where I will post each month about my experience with them. It will be totally honest. I won't kiss ass or lie but I won't cause drama or bitch just for the hell of it.
The teck staff (who I'm told do not post on boards) do not know my account details, making this a fair and objective test.
This one is extra because in that thread people discussed moving to a new host and how seamless it all is.
First impressions are pretty positive. I started chatting to a guy called Sean over ICQ who did all the paperwork and confirmed my current deal. He led me to believe that the server would be good to go as of Monday, in fact it was delivered the same day (Friday) and content was on the server the very next day. Sean also said to email him over the weekend if I need to, as emails would go to his pda. I was pretty impressed that he was willing to take an email from me on his off hours, not that I would dream of doing that!
From the point of first contact with Sean to the point of having a working server was 4 and a half hours. I was expecting days not hours so was pleasantly surpised.
My big concern from the outset was the loss of my beloved control panel. It feels cheeky asking them to add wordpress or add a domain etc, but I will have to get used to that. I did want phpmyadmin installed, which they did. From the point of asking, to the point where it was installed, was about 4 1/2 minutes.
Tickets are responded to mega quickly. One as quick as 30 seconds.
I have discovered one thing I don't like. They don't like you to choose your own password and you can't have ftp passwords which include words currently in the dictionary. Yes I know that's for security but it's a bit not annoying when I'm used to my current pass.
Today I wanted set passwords for some email accounts, they don't like having passwords in the tickets and so asked me to call in. I can't do that as I live in the UK, only have a mobile phone and can't make international calls on it. They called me to get the passwords and it wasn't an issue for them. I'm pleased with that and it makes you feel like nothing is a hassle to them.
The other thing about teck support is an issue I had with .wmv files streaming and not downloading. My last host took 7 days to correct this issue. Nat Net took 7 minutes.
I know this review is all positive, but I can't fault them so far. The lack of a control panel is not an issue as long as they keep answering tickets this quickly. The password issue is annoying but I understand why they do it. They do seem more security aware than other companies, but I can't bitch about that.
As for being seamless, they didn't move .htaccess but I'm not sure if ssh does that. They kept my current mysql passwords saving me time on that. I had to change some paths which I expected to. All in all, easier than previous moves.
9/10 so far.
