Really a freak accident.

Shap 07-25-2009 02:39 PM

They are saying he's doing much better. That's good news

DateDoc 07-25-2009 06:12 PM

Yup, "stable, satisfactory condition" now.

Si 07-25-2009 06:34 PM

he'll be ok.

as if he wasn't having bad enough season already

Warren 07-25-2009 09:06 PM

Hope he is going to be ok.

F1 is the only sport I was really ever interested in, I kinda lost interest when Schui retired, I still have a F1 Schumacher tag watch lol, Senna was a huge loss to the sport when he passed, he and Michael were the best drivers imo.

F1 Cars have an open cockpit, he was doing about 270 km/hour (about 170 mph i think) when a piece of metal comming from Barrichellos car hit him in the helmet. He passed out in his car but his foot came to rest at the brake peddal, slowing him down to about 130 km/hour when he hit the wall front first. The damage to the helmet you see is from the piece hitting him at that speed.

One thing i don't get is this: Barrichello was a very long way before him finishing his lap at Q2 so what caused the piece of metal to still be bumping up and down the track? It must have been bumping for atleast 1 minute.... He had NO CARS infront of him.... just don't get it.

Felipe Massa is not in life threatening condition after crash...

Yea it seems odd that it would still be bouncing on the track, however don't forget Barrichello's car was also going very fast and it was some sort of suspension spring that hit him, so who knows how far it was flying after it first came off the car.

If it was from the suspension and was under a lot of tension then shot down at the track, it could have bounced who knows how high into the air. Possibly bouncing a few times before Massa's car came along.

Freaky accident. Especially after Henry Surtees was killed last weekend in a similar accident in F2.

WeirdHomer 07-27-2009 05:06 AM

That race was doomed.... On the Sunday race Alonso was running in first position and made his first pitstop, the guy lifted the sign giving Alonso the all clear to take off but didn't see they where still working on the right front tire. It came off about half into his 2nd stint bouncing around the track. A steward had to run away to get away from the bouncing wheel. Renault now recieved a penalty from the FIA, they can't compete in next race.

Dirty Lord 07-27-2009 05:07 AM

i really hope that he's fine :(

It was quite a serious incident, but I have to wonder how much the FIA ruling was based on the incident and how much was based on them not liking Flavio Briatore at the moment :)

Exactly my thoughts.... FIA rules indicate there has to be a "safety" system so the wheels can't get loose from the car but when a wheel is changed in a pitstop that system is also changed because it isn't mounted on the wheel well but on the wheel attachment so it's in my opinion not a case of "bad intentions" from Renault but a human error. Anyway Renault appealed and i hope they win.

Ross 07-27-2009 06:03 AM

I'm constantly checking up on this story. As a huge F1 fan I really hope Massa pulls through. My fav driver is Lewis Hamilton but Massa seems so dignified and sportsman like, I really hope he gets back into his seat behind the wheel of that car. Defo one the best drivers in F1. He should be a World Champion by now, and I certainly believe he will be a Champion before he calls it a day in racing.

News reports are that he has been woken from the induced coma and is responding well to treatment. Lets hope we see him driving again soon. Those drivers are very brave doing what they do.

Ravage 07-27-2009 07:16 AM

He's really lucky he ended up in the tires and not a wall.

Yup. As bad as it is/was, it could actually have been "much" worse... :2 cents:
