Jack Sparrow 07-25-2009 04:09 AM

WOW, that last dude running away from that train must have been saying his prayers every night.

damn what ever that other thing was, it looked like it was out of control when it came onto the scene of the other train that was derailed. I bet that last guy was shitting bricks after that.

That's what makes me think the video is a fake... like "Congrats! You didn't get torn into a thousand pieces by another train flying down the tracks? What a great show!"

Wierd. :disgust

greg80 07-25-2009 09:16 AM

It's not fake. It happened yesterday. The second engine was coming to help rescue of people trapped in the first one, but its breaks broke down and it went out of control. Judging by people talking before it came, they knew it was coming.

The derail occured coming out of a sharp curve, not entirely uncommon. First thing I noticed is how filthy the track is. They haven't ran a regulator through there is fucking ages. Not exactly the sort of thing that causes a derail, but it is a sure sign that they aren't exactly up to par with their track maintenance. I notice that coming out of the turn there is a pretty good dip in the tracks. A good sign that this hasn't been lifted and lined in ages either. No lift and line could suggest a drop in the elevation for the highside ride. A turn that sharp would require a pretty good difference in elevations between highside and lowside. Whatever caused the derail, it happened coming out of the curve.

Dips on tangent track and poor curves aren't entirely uncommon themselves, but judging by that boomtruck's track speed, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that they fire trains down that track at speeds which are far from safe on that track. From what I see that should be a 30mile/hour top speed line at most. Definitely not mainline speed, but there's eastern Europe for ya.

The track unit you saw barreling down the track was a boom truck, most likely called out for cleanup. It's nothing more than a big truck rigged for track use. That guy was definitely flying way to fast, and if European rail procedures operate anything even close to North American he should have been radioed a mile point at which the derail happened. Coming around the curve that fast on what looks like dusty rail, he probably had the breaks on the whole time you saw him in that video. A heavy unit like that takes a good stretch to slow down. rainy days a boom truck can slide for hundreds of yards.

All in all, I'd say Croatia's on track regulations and general track maintenance probably just blow ass...

It looks like the boom truck was out of control. I don't think he was going to fast deliberately...he just couldn't control it

True. What I read was that the whole country is in big trouble and might face bankruptcy very soon.

digitaldivas 07-25-2009 10:49 AM

yeah, thats a weird video, and the truck scared the hell out of me :(

That no one was killed or injured when that second vehicle came racing down the tracks. :2 cents:

SmokeyTheBear 07-25-2009 10:52 AM

someone mentioned in the comments that the train had no conducter , he had jumped out when the brakes failed, not sure if they were referring to the first one or the second one . it was also mentioned the second train was an emergency train sent to help with the first wreck.

Roby 07-25-2009 10:52 AM

very sad to see this

John-ACWM 07-25-2009 10:59 AM

WOW,about to happen the second disaster.

Nah, I'd say the guy was just rushing to the scene, came around the corner and unexpectedly saw that the derailment was right there, and hit the brakes. It stopped right at about the distance you can expect it to stop. There's a lot of weight in those trucks, and traveling at that speed, you'll slide a long fucking way with the brakes punched. Braking on rail is a lot different than braking on asphalt. Out here it is regulation that all track units must perform a DTS (distance to stop) test as soon as they take a block and are on track. DTS must be logged as the speed traveled and estimated distance it takes to stop. At 20mph on a standard dry day, a highrail pickup truck will slide anywhere from 50-80feet. Safe following distance for traveling track units according to CN Rules is 300 feet in good weather. In rain, snow, or poor conditions they recommend safe follow to be as much as a quarter mile!

I couldn't really tell due to the video quality if the rail was jointed or continuous weld. But to me it looked continuous (could just be blurry, but the rail sides are covered in dirt and I can't see joint bars) If it was indeed CWR with dry dust and shit on it, you could be waiting a good little while to come to a complete stop. Rail traffic control should have had a slow order on the tracks, with a 10mph restriction. But like I said, I doubt Croatia has fuck all for on track regulation...
