Chevron getting hit with $27B fine for destroying Ecuador's rain forest

Chevron has no plans to pay it!

Chevron is expected to be slapped with a $27 billion judgment by a court in Ecuador for environmental damage done to the rain forest between 1964 and 1990.

It will be the largest environmental judgment ever. Chevron has no plans to pay it.

Chevron intends to fight enforcement by claiming the trial was unfair, in part because Ecuador's president has publicly supported the plaintiffs.

Too bad Chevron spent the early part of the case arguing trial should be held in Ecuador. It appears that the oil company thought it would be able to take advantage of Ecuador's legal system.

Yea.... life would be a whole lot better without all those pesky oil companies selling us cheap oil and gasoline so we can have all those unnecessary modern conveniences like transportation and plastics. Life was so much better before we had all that crap and lived in harmony with nature. :winkwink:

I *really* think so. I'd be happy to live in a shack in the middle of the forest and eat whatever I can find. Fuck computers and fuck modern way of life. Too bad, I can't do that. Fucking wife likes modern stuff.. luckily, as a compromise, I get to spend a month per year in a shack in the middle of a forest without indoors plumbing :1orglaugh. Bliss.

surely ecuador will just kick them out of the country if they dont pay up?

Just saw a program on The Discovery Channel about this case or a similar one. The problem is also with the rulers of Ecuador. They allowed it to happen while taking money from the iol companies.

Also covered a similar situation in Angola.

It's the countries leaders who set the policies and let the companies get away with these crimes.
