But run for the hills when it comes to advising clients to invest in the Internet.

The days of infinite margins, 1,000% productivity gains, and growth of market throughout the universe are long over. Internet companies now should be treated, at best, like utility companies that get bought at about 10 times earnings and sold at 13 times earnings. Even then, I'm not sure I would give the Internet sector the same respect as the monopoly-protected utility sector.

Don't just ask me. Ask the best. Nobody can figure out a business model.

Pleasurepays 07-19-2009 04:46 PM

the guy talks about business online like its a magical dwarf living on a cloud that can't be understood.

gwidomains 07-19-2009 04:55 PM

He's right if he means publically traded companies now in comparison to 97-00.

slapass 07-19-2009 04:59 PM

This probably means it is a good time to invest as if others are pulling back, then deals are to be had.

sortie 07-19-2009 05:21 PM

There are plenty of good biz models for the internet.
The issue is that, by design, the shit models get all the traffic.

:1orglaugh

$29.95 a month to view porn is a damn good model; but.............

burntfilm 07-19-2009 05:23 PM

it's all context, just because you can't always make 10 grand on the dollar, doesn't mean you can't make 5

Blackamooka 07-19-2009 05:25 PM

Listen to this man. Get out now.

EscortBiz 07-19-2009 05:26 PM

plain and simple we will be forced to unspoil the surfer soon (not just porn) everyone is scared to be the first to say enough is enough of free everything

it will be either start charging give a interesting service or die

you cant buy stuff or pay back investors with hits

Pseudonymous 07-19-2009 05:34 PM

EscortBiz, do you understand who these people are that are spoiling the biz? lol do you think they should care? I don't think you guys get it. There will always be these people. I don't blame them for a second. If they make money, they make money. Why would they care how much they leave on the table for future business men?

Nobody is going to stop 'unspoiling' their surfers. lol there will always be the type of people that aren't looking long term. That's all it is. They aren't doing anything wrong. Well the ones stealing content, yes.

Not sure why so many people expect everyone to work as a team to make money for the long haul. lol there are alot of people that don't have the skill to do that. So they adapt. They make as much money as they can for as long as they can. Then they'll use that money to invest in other ideas. Not everyone is here for the long haul.

Sorry it just sounds like you think everyone should join together and stop with free porn ;) lol

That's like saying, I know how to end poverty. We as a whole need to just all put in a bit of our own money and help them out. It's every man for themselves, pretty much. Who cares how the rest of the industry suffers. You think Sony cares if Panasonic suffers when they release a better or cheaper product. lol

Just because the WSJ has not figured out how to make money on the internet does not mean others have not. It's not the only industry of course, but there are some pretty heavy hitters - Google, Porn, Amazon, Porn, EBay, Porn, NetFlix, Porn.

From what I see the web still has a long way to go, and there's still fortunes to be made.

LiveDose 07-19-2009 07:44 PM

LOL, let's talk about the print newspaper biz...

you truly have 0 clue none ziltch nada
you didnt read the article thats your first problem

problem two is you have yet to make a damn fucking cent yet you talk as if you gone thru a few million dollars a week in revenue and trial and error, LEARN TO FUCKING LISTEN AND STOP ASSUMING SHIT or you will burn lots of peoples money

NOW I will break it down for you even thou I should of just ignored your ignorance

Tons of companies that you see out there giving away stuff online arent in the green, they only survive because investors and their pipe dreams.

Making money by raising money is not a business model.

So if you raise money to start a business and you lose but you have a plan to be profitable, well that's good that's legit, now the exit strategy for many was build up a user base sell the site based off that profit or not (that works in mainstream or did till very recent).

Now investors and companies in the business of doing M&A's want to see businesses that make profit, the investors are learning quick that traffic and hits will no longer translate in a huge sale.

So again if you can make profit giving stuff away why not who cares, but for online newspapers (just an example) to cry they are not making money and seeing the largest publications go bankrupt, the reason is they gave away too much too long, THAT IS NOT A BUSINESS MODEL SHORT TERM OR LONG TERM they are surviving off investors and credit lines.

Actually I don't need to read the article to know what you're saying. You said it clearly right here

"plain and simple we will be forced to unspoil the surfer soon (not just porn) everyone is scared to be the first to say enough is enough of free everything"

You stated or atleast implied that we as adult webmasters need to stop giving everything away for free. Is it not? I must have misread that then.

Tons of companies that are giving stuff away for free are ALSO in the green. And everything I said makes complete sense when we are speaking about the adult industry. Considering your post, you made it seem like you were talking about everyone as a whole and not just the companies mentioned in your article and everyone would agree with me there.

I agree with what you just said. But I don't agree with the first post you made. You stated two different things. In those cases mentioned in the article, yes that is correct, I see where you're coming from. But dont' state that on here like that's what adult webmasters problems are.

And relax a bit. Don't fucking call me clueless and lose your fucking marbles over a simple post that argues some points. lol jeez.

Iron Fist 07-19-2009 10:04 PM

You mean it's wrong to invest in a company without a solid business plan or tangible product?
