Do you think if Playboy or Hustler...

Started branding Online much earlier in the game, they would have dominated the Web?

sandman! 07-18-2009 11:27 PM

no......

EscortBiz 07-18-2009 11:30 PM

much earlier as in 2000

playboy did such a good job as branding themselves as softcore that now in online world where softcore photos isnt even something that people notice its very hard for them to change.

But playboy has something that nobody has and that is people associate a playboy girl with the word perfection, every girls dream (at least those who want to do some adult) is to be in playboy.

having said that and really understanding that and other markets if id be in charge of playboy I can guarantee without a doubt I can setup a certain thing that will do at least 30mil in profit a year and to make that happen only have to invest 75k and id put my money on the line, but I think management there is too old they are still busy worrying about the wrong things, so like most of these companies they will just continue to die off and maybe someone will catch em up a younger minded person and do the right thing.

d-null 07-18-2009 11:30 PM

don't you remember all the playboy scans that were all over the net even before the web?

Semi-Retired-Dave 07-18-2009 11:34 PM

Well, we thought we started late and we started in 96', I can only imagine if they started around the same time. Having such a strong brand, I think if done right, they could have killed it.

But then again, Hustler could have been the Hardcore leader and Plaboy the softcore/classy.

burntfilm 07-18-2009 11:34 PM

playboy seemed to spend the 90's and 00's going after the mainstream, semi adult dollar, with movies and E! specials etc.

their whole "creative" direction always seemed so misguided... they had all the very hottest girls, yet they always seemed to get caught up in this "artsy" kind of thing, especially in their videos, where they did everything they could to fuck it up (try to watch some of the playmate videos from the 90's, strange lighting, moving cameras that could make you seasick watching them, so many cutscenes you could hardly get a look at the model half the time, dudes and scenery strobing by more than the model, they achieved taking an extremely hot model and creating an absolutely annoying bunch of crap most of the time :2 cents:

Only if it's Sony. lol....J/k
You have a Valid Point. But they do own Spice but didn't want to affiliate the two.

playboy should be thankful there are over 2million people in prison in the usa, if not for the huge inmate population adult magazines would of been bankrupt years ago, its one of those magazines that inmates dont really share so most get their own

Do they get access to it, you would think with the paper cuts, they could be slicing each other up.

Its like 20 bucks for Cigarettes but 50 bucks for a fresh copy of Playboy?

dead on, i remember them well. Like they were more interested in impressing the model or hollywood than pleasing the guy trying to wack off.

Agent 488 07-19-2009 01:29 AM

no. unless they update their style from the dated airbrushed fake bimbo shit. people just really aren't into it anymore.

vod 07-19-2009 06:18 AM

i think if hustler bought playboybunny.com from me years ago that would have started them online years before they should have... and playboy should have never tried to buy the domain from me and then sue me over it later when I tried to sell playboybunny.com back to playboy... i tried to sell the domain playboybunny.com to playboy and got sued... by playboy over it..lol so I sued network solutions and Icann..for selling it to me..lol

The court ordered me to give the domain back to playboy and I told the court NO... i intend to give it back to the company I bought it from, network solutions...which was perfectly legal... ;- )

then someone from Cal. had the domain on backorder and back all over again... playboy ultimately ended up with the domain but should have handled it much better...

I only wanted $100,000. for all 3 domains I owed in the beginning.. playboybunny.com, playboybus.com and playboywomen.com

thats my story and I am sticking to it ;- ) lol

justinsain 07-19-2009 06:25 AM

If there was no FREE porn and copyright infringement on the internet they would have probably enjoyed
the same share of the market they had pre internet.

yea, that's probably part of it too... they have huge overhead and pretty thin margins, any drop in sales really hurts them...

notime 07-19-2009 08:56 AM

Hustler just closed the European office last week.

american pervert 07-19-2009 12:13 PM

they made the same mistake video companies did, they didn't take the internet seriously and jumped on the band wagon too late. in 1998-2001 hardly any studios had any content online or even consumer websites.

I always felt PB never took the internet serious (and was relying too much on the brand selling itself) and once they realized how huge it was they missed the boat.

Too bad huh...

Shap 07-19-2009 02:32 PM

I think society changed faster than playboy could keep up. I'm 32. When I was a teenager getting your hands on a playboy was a jackpot. I imagine even for 20 and 30 year olds looking through a playboy was arousing. In the past 10 years with the web and mtv era everything has changed. It takes more to arouse someone and even more then that to get them off. Where playboy used to do the job they no longer do and as a result have lost that edge. I imagine teenagers today don't crave to get their hands on a playboy but crave to get on redtube and youporn. Big difference :disgust

Semi-Retired-Dave 07-19-2009 05:05 PM

I don't think it was more about wacking off...There was just something special about getting your hands on that freshly printed copy. Till today, they do an amazing job on printing the magazine.

Fair enough. By that rationale they never had a chance online. If their power was high quality freshly printed magazine then converting that into something equivalent on the web was probably never possible.

Hank_Heartland 07-19-2009 09:11 PM

You guys really believe that shit or are you just kiddin me:warning

fatfoo 07-19-2009 10:09 PM

Probably not. But they would have been bigger.

wizzart 07-19-2009 10:13 PM

maybe, who know that....

I agree, it's getting that look and feel to the web back in 95'.
There new stuff looks nice, but it should have been here a decade ago.

tranza 07-20-2009 04:36 AM

So, hustler is falling?

slapass 07-20-2009 06:10 AM

Even to this day playboy does not have an affiliate prgoram for playboy.com... What are they waiting for? Put all the content out there and let the surfer know. you get the old celebs. The old playmates. the newsstand specials etc. Put it all out there. I know htey had some legal issues as to what they could put on the web but that has to be sorted by now.

Let the affiliate system work for you. The brand is probably stronger then it has ever been. they are on E, tshirts, tatoos. Everyone associates Playboy with beautiful women.

very good point

slapass 07-20-2009 06:16 AM

I just looked at Playboy.com and they do that but they have no one selling it. I sell porn online and have for years and I had no idea what playboy.com was offering. Why would that be????
