quick design question

Are image maps compatible with all browsers/system?

I'm considering using some on a tour instead of linking every gif, I would just make an image map that emcompasses all gif and have a single link.

A normal html coded image map is very compatible, it pretty much works in every browser (I even think it works in text browsers such as Lynx)

I don't see much use of image mapping anymore although it used to be all the rage. I thought maybe it was because it became incompatable with the newer versions of IE or something similar. If not, what reasons do you think the technique isn't used much anymore?
