GOOGLE to Launch Operating System That is set to go head to head with Microsoft

ohhh wonder if this will take off

Google is to launch a new operating system that is set to go head to head against Microsoft's Windows.

Google is developing an operating system (OS) for personal computers, in a direct challenge to market leader Microsoft and its Windows system.

Google Chrome OS will be aimed initially at small, low-cost netbooks, but will eventually be used on PCs as well.

Google said netbooks with Chrome OS could be on sale by the middle of 2010.

"Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS," the firm said in its official blog.

The operating system, which will run on an open source licence, was a "natural extension" of its Chrome browser, the firm said.

The news comes just months before Microsoft launches the latest version of its operating system, called Windows 7.

'Back to basics'

"We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you on to the web in a few seconds," said the blog post written by Sundar Pichai, vice-president of product management, and Google's engineering director Linus Upson.

about time some company who can actually threaten MS/OS do so.

Competition is good for the consumer.

Windows is soooo freaking bulky now days its amazing.

james_clickmemedia 07-08-2009 10:21 AM

unless they can get it shipped on new pc's it will be hard for them to get any market penetration.

I'd like to see if Microsoft will compete on price point. If the O/S reviews are good and favorable after the initial betas are done, I might just scrap Windows altogether. I've used Linux before, but all my favorite tools are on Windows and using WINE just didn't cut it.

If they can have an O/S that loads from powerup in 10 seconds or less with the same functionality, they just might do it. I already use them for bookmarks, history, and e-mail.

I guess it would be down to price and user friendliness

It could be useful.. if enough developers actually start making apps for such operating system. I believe that's the key to success for any OS. Have enough developers creating content for it so the public will want in.

I personally feel that its also good for the producer... Necessity is the mother of all invention.

If they want success they need to cater to the gamers market. Personally I think that's why it's taken Apple so long to move mainstream and linux/unix OS's never crossed over. They ignore the gaming market.

People have kids, and kids want to play the popular games on the family computer.

i can just imagine the ads they will place when you are trying to write a word document or spreadsheet

Yeah but this is also due to the game developers being too lazy to port over their games onto other operating systems.

I trust Google more than Microsoft, but that is not saying much.

NextBigTube 07-08-2009 12:22 PM

Its easier said than done

grumpy 07-08-2009 01:00 PM

whats the fuz, linux tried, apple tried. To much software runs on windows. If it happens it wont happen fast.

grumpy 07-08-2009 01:09 PM

actually there is something simular and im testing it now.
When my pc boots i get the option "Express gate", starts with a browser, photo stuff and skype.

Works fast :)

People did anticipate chrome would be the start of the google OS, because it has it's own task manager thingie. Almost everything's done through the browser nowadays...

V_RocKs 07-08-2009 01:38 PM

Until it has something to replace:

Photoshop (and its many filters)
Dreamweaver (and its ease of use)
Windows Live Writer (and its ease of use)

The vast amount of SEO/Etc tools written for Windows...

I will be sticking with Windows.

Meeper 07-08-2009 01:45 PM

As much as I would like to see it, I really don't think even Google can take down Microsoft as the dominant operating system. I liked chrome but I don't use it over Firefox. I will definitely try it out but I don't see it being another Microsoft by any means.

James124 07-08-2009 01:47 PM

google brand is not used to desktop critics.. MS, however, is fucking shock resitant by now...

Pleasurepays 07-08-2009 01:55 PM

putting aside the "i hate microsoft" bullshit... it will ultimately come down to core competency. microsofts is building operating systems and software. googles is returning relevant search results. i would say that the odds are against google when it comes to going head to head with microsoft, playing their game, with their customers, on their playing field.

you don't just wake up one day and decide you want to be heavy weight champ of the world and are going to defeat someone with a 50-0 record.

mozadek 07-08-2009 02:11 PM

Microsoft has nothing to worry about.
