First day on a Mac

only reason i got a Mac was because of all the spyware and viruses i've had - i'll surf the Net and download crap with the Mac and work on a PC.

my hard drive got zapped on monday, everything totally corrupted, costing me almost a grand for data recovery. i have no proof but i think all the spyware and viruses i've been cleaning out for 2 years almost constantly had something to do with it - the dude fixing it says no tho. cheesey Samsung hard drives.

Hey Mutt, all joking aside, it takes some time to adjust, really frustrating at first but then 6 mos. down the line you'll be on your friends PC and realize how happy you are that you switched.

Ok pc guys... which I'm a former....

Try this,

Take out one of your 4 year old, off the shelf PC Laptops... any of them... Then load it up with oh, 2 gigs of ram.

Now load up a remote client, adobe c23, Episode pro (which they make for the pc now btw) create a batch encode from Mini DV to Flash and let it run, Dreamweaver, Adobe Lightroom (since you don't have access to aperture) and top it off with you browser and say 10-15 open sites...

While your at it, hook up 3 Firewire 800 External drives to it, Dual screen it with a 30 Inch Monitor and plug in the rest of your goodies, like your wacom tablet, a Epson R1800, You firewire CF card reader, You Firewire DV capture, etc.

Now, while your running all this stuff, use that remote to control 2 other machines doing basically the same stuff, so you only have one keyboard and mouse, and make the whole setup seem like your just running one large multi screen setup.

Now run all of that stable. I have a machine on my desk that has now been doing that continuously since Feb, without one lockup, or crashes and the only reboots due to system updates.

I'm sorry, but being an MSCE myself and working in IT for over 20 years, I have NEVER seen a machine build this well, this rock solid.

Totally agree with you there. Not dumb but ignorant to hardware and software configurations. People like macs because you can be ignorant to what hardware you have and it will still work with everything.

PC come with an array of configurations and dumbasses think they can get a barebones PC and do multimedia with it. If you want a PC where you can be ignorant and you know it has the right hardware just get a SONY VAIO PC they are configured for just about anything you can throw at them.

As for VIRUSES and SPYWARE, stay away from shady sites and software!!!!

Your going to have more ignorant people on MACs thats for sure because there is no configuration required and you dont really need to add anything to it to make it work for multimedia.

Same if you buy a decent PC but the problem is people buy the cheapest PC they can find and compare that to a MAC.

If they sold MACs in cheaper configurations it would be the same scenario.

MAC is nothing but PC with a different operating system. They adopted INTEL (PC) chipsets/motherboards in 2001.

MAC users are ignorant to the fact that its really the same machine now with different OS.

If you dig deeper its using the same graphics cards, hard drives, memory, sound chipset.

Your software doesnt really care about what the windows look like if you give it the right hardware.

In addidtion MAC user tend to be upgrade ignorant as opposed to the expert PC who can configure their machines with faster hard drives, more memory, a real time rendering graphics card that will run circles around anything, & more.

Ask most MAC users they probably don't even know how to change a video card.

Stop complaining and do a little research. Both machines are great MAC is overpriced though. You pay more for a MAC because they spend more on marketing. PC or MAC will do the job.

This isn't a fair comparison. In 1999 i was building rock solid PC editing machines with Perception catpure cards that captured uncompressed 4:2:2 video with no generation loss what so ever and no frame drops. I had a raid controller ultra wide SCSI drives, & less than a gig of RAM. Back then you had to have a monster of a machine I spent like 6 K on my machine and the capture card was about $3k. Things have come along way but even back then I had a rock solid PC for editing that rendered with premiere and after effects in real time. Back then the editing cards or capture card used its own memory to render and its own processors built onto the board. I could still edit with that machine it was rock solid. This was when windows NT was the best OS. I like it best because it wasn't consumer. After windows 98 they started making operating system idiot proof and senior friendly. If you ask me they should have 2 versions of OS for mac and PC.

My viruse protection has always been free.... I don't download from untrusted sources or visit shady sites. I have never installed virus protection its annoying and unnecessary for me. I chose what I download.

People with kids and that are dumb enough to let them use their office machines or better yet dumb enough to download the viruses.... better get protection.

Well, actually, if you look at a mac, they kind of do have what your talking about... The interface is just a pretty and simple way to use the unix undersystem... so if you tech savvy, you have the full power of Unix at your fingertips...

2 - No price premium for flashy design
There still isn?t a PC maker on the planet that can hold a candle to Apple when it comes to product design. But not everyone wants or needs a computer that looks like it fell off the back of a Bang & Olufsen lorry. Macs routinely cost more than their PC equivalents. The cheapest Mac you can buy, the Mac mini, costs $949 and comes with a piddling 60GB hard disk, a meagre 512MB of RAM and no screen. Pop over to Dell, and that same $949 will buy you a Dimension E520 Vista PC with a 160GB hard disk, 1GB of RAM and a 19in flat panel display. Dell?s cheapest system costs just $898 at the time of writing. We?re not expecting Dell?s bargain-basement models to trouble our A List anytime soon, and Kate Moss wouldn?t be seen dead near one, but they?ll suffice for a cheap office PC that sits under a desk all day or a computer for the kids? homework. Mac buyers simply don?t have that choice.

3 - Thousands of decent games
?I was designed for the home,? scream the Mac ads. You were? Then how come you?ve got such a poor bunch of games? At the time of writing, the top-selling Mac games on Amazon.com were World of Warcraft (yawn), Crazy Machines: The Wacky Contraptions Game (What the?!) and The Sims II ? a two-year-old title designed for loners who need imaginary friends to compensate for the lack of actual people in their pitiful lives. Want the adrenaline-filled 3D action and spectacular graphics of Rainbow Six: Vegas? Or, a spin round the track at high-velocity in a beautifully rendered Porsche in Test Drive Unlimited? Want to revisit a seminal classic such as Half-Life 2? Sorry, you can?t. Computer says no. That?s not to mention the fact that the PC has a near-monopoly on all the decent graphics hardware. And even if you did want to upgrade your Mac?s graphics, you probably couldn?t anyway. ?Nvidia graphics options for Apple desktops and notebooks can only be purchased through Apple or as Apple update kits,? warns Nvidia?s website. If you?re even halfway serious about gaming, you need a PC.

4 - Two mouse buttons
Yes, we know Macs are meant to be so simple your Grandma could partition the hard disk while solving the Countdown conundrum, but do they really need to be dumbed down to use only one mouse button? A monkey with Attention Deficit Disorder could master two buttons, but Apple?s (seemingly not ironically named) Mighty Mouse resorts to a single mouse click by default. Yes, you can easily tweak the driver for two buttons or simply plug in a normal mouse, but a firing squad is too lenient for the imbecile who decided that pressing Ctrl and left-click was a better out-of-the-box solution than a single press of the right button.

5 - Broadband just works
It?s hardly their fault, but our poor Mac friends aren?t always well served by the ISPs. Broadband modems can fail to work properly on Macs (especially with Bigpond cable), and when customers attempt to phone the tech-support lines for assistance, they?re none too amused when the script-reading person at the other end tells them to ?click on the Start button and select Control Panel?. Finding a reliable ISP is hard enough; finding one that also supports Macs is a headache you really don?t need.

6 - Custom-made systems
Gaming PCs, video workstations, media centres, digital photo PCs, build-your-own, mini-chassis, midi-towers, business PCs? need we go on? There are dozens of different desktop PC configurations that can be fine-tailored with thousands of specialist components to meet a buyer?s requirements. How many flavours do Mac desktops come in? Three. Mac mini, iMac and Mac Pro. If none of those meets your needs, take a hike.

The open architecture of the PC platform, on the other hand, gives you access to an immense range of configurations, enabling you to tailor a PC to your needs without wasting money on capabilities you won?t use. It also means you can make modular upgrades, such as fitting a new CPU and motherboard without having to replace your existing graphics card and hard drives. Try that with an iMac.

7 - Macs are months behind
If you want cutting-edge hardware, you need a PC. Remember when the Intel Core CPU was released? Apple finally jumped ship from IBM processors, even though PC processors had been outstripping the PowerPC G5 CPU for years. But even though the agreement was trumpeted from the rooftops by Intel and Apple, it still took months for the complete Mac range to go fully Intel. Core 2 was even worse, with almost the whole PC market having them before Apple shipped a single Core 2 Mac. The same is true of almost all new technology. Not only is there no option to buy a desktop or laptop Mac with an internal HD DVD or Blu-ray drive, you can?t buy an internal Mac-compatible one at all. The same is again true of graphics: while the PC has up-to-the-minute 3D video hardware, Macs are an entire generation behind. And while PC users have had super-fast draft 802.11n wireless for nearly two years, Apple users have only just acquired it.
