WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Drug Enforcement Administration is joining the investigation into Michael Jackson's death, a law enforcement official said late Wednesday.

The DEA is stepping in at the request of the Los Angeles Police Department, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the ongoing investigation. The federal agency can provide resources and experience in investigating drug abuse, illicit drug manufacturers known as "pill mills" and substances local police may not be familiar with, the official said.

The DEA would likely play a role in looking at Jackson's doctors, the drugs they prescribed and whether the doctors were registered with the DEA to prescribe those substances as federal law requires. Also, investigators are expected to look at the sources of the drugs provided to Jackson or his associates to determine if there was a pattern of trafficking.

Following Jackson's death, allegations emerged that the 50-year-old King of Pop had been consuming painkillers, sedatives and antidepressants. But Cherilyn Lee, a registered nurse whose specialty includes nutritional counseling, said she encountered a man tortured by sleep deprivation and one who expressed opposition to recreational drug use.

Lee told the AP Tuesday she repeatedly rejected Jackson's demands for the drug, Diprivan. Several months ago, Jackson had begun badgering Lee about Diprivan, also known as Propofol, Lee said. It is an intravenous anesthetic drug widely used in operating rooms to induce unconsciousness. It is generally given through an IV needle in the hand.

But the federal law enforcement official said that Propofol is not a controlled substance. "It's not the kind of drug the DEA has seen being abused," the official said.

nobody should be on? um, Ive known people with scripts to drugs that kill people daily. Morphine and many others.

Hmm morphine is the most addictive painkiller in ther world and is used everyday all day, in fact, no pain meds come close to morphine, all are measures compared to morphones ability to mitigate pain, none come close... maybe we should start by removing morphine from doctors prescribe book. lol

these DEA folks are silly, some people may prefer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propofol compared to other forms of meds, the DEA has no place between a doctor and patient when it comes to medicines prescribed

When MJ was on the cocktail he was being prescriped it should be investigated regardless. no DR should be giving a patient 3 different types of SSRI's, let alone that slew of pain medication/sedatives. The DEA isnt just some joe shmoe cops, they do have dr's working for them as well. It doesnt take a genius to figure out jackson was abusing this stuff. why not try to get to the bottom of it and figure out the source or why the dr was administering all this?

well if you were educated in SSRI's then id take your word for it but NO ONE should be on 3 different types. If you knew about the dosages youd be retracting your statement too. Not only that but these drugs have not been tested by the FDA to be used together. THEY ARENT MEANT TO BE USED TOGETHER. SSRI's can work synergistically to increase a patients symptoms if not administered properly, now throw in 2 more variables of 2 other meds which werent tested. Now you TELL ME the dr's isnt to blame. Im not dismissing the fact he had a drug problem and continued to take other medications (pain killers, etc), however no dr should have been giving that amount of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

http://www.associatedcontent.com/art..._to_ssris.html

"Serotonin Syndrome (SS) is a serious side-effect usually resulting from interactions between multiple SSRIs taken in conjunction, or between an SSRI and an MAO inhibitor. SS results from the availability of too much serotonin in the brain, and can cause serious symptoms, such as seizures and hallucinations."

If that moron really did ask for propofol to be used as a sleep aid he didn't just deserve to die, he wanted to. next to propofol morphine is childrens aspirin.

propofol induces coma, you have to be intubated and it has to be given in a very controlled IV setting it starts your coma less than a minute after being administrated and you come out of it within a few minutes of it being stopped. It has no narcotic hangover and has the added benefit of causing amnesia during use, so even if you did wake up or feel some of the surgery you wouldnt remember it.

Its an amazing drug for anesthesia but only a total idiot would even ask that it be used to induce sleep...it doesnt induce sleep, it induces a coma.

If I am not mistaken they give propofol during colonoscopies. This guy had major issues.
