Twitter about to become victim of own sucess?

Ok I must admit I've never tweeted, twitted or what ever the fuck you call it. Personally I think it's gay and why would I need to type every damn thing I do all day for a bunch of bored people to read?

However it seems there are millions of bored people whom read that shit and every time I turn around someone is pitching their twitter page. From radio DJ's to movie stars it's all big time now.

So how long before it becomes too much of a fad and dies? I would think it's getting close to peak myself as I'm already tired of hearing about it. Anyone want to guess how much longer it has in the lime light?

BV 07-01-2009 01:35 PM

What gets me is how much CNN pushes that shit. (AS GAY AS IT IS)

Tom_PM 07-01-2009 01:40 PM

I opened an account a couple of months ago and ever followed anyone. I've only ever posted 1 thing on it, and after checking it just now it claims I have 1 follower. But when I check who it is, the page is blank.

They can't seem to keep it working correctly either way.

Houdini 07-01-2009 01:54 PM

It will be years before it dies. It's integrated everywhere, the data it holds on it's sites is extremely valuable, even if some of it is just random blurbs. There isn't a place on the net that gives you real time "news" search like Twitter can.

search.twitter.com

Easton 07-01-2009 01:56 PM

one can only hope it goes away soon

i can't imagine the guy in the boardroom who thought it was the next big thing

man was he right though, i'm clueless as to why it's even remotely popular

getmouthy 07-01-2009 01:57 PM

I agree with you, I don't care for twitter and I'm tired of hearing people talk about it.. unfortunately I think it's gonna be around for quite a while.

It's the easiest/quickest route to get news good or bad.. i.e. when perez was getting his teeth knocked out, it was "tweeted" hours before even the gossip sites had it

GrouchyAdmin 07-01-2009 01:58 PM

hey guys heres almost a sentence im in the pisser and buying rubbers <TWAT>

Machete_ 07-01-2009 01:59 PM

The worse thing about twitter, is that people use it as a credible news/information source

IMHO, everybody who says something like "it's gay" or "twitter sucks" doesn't realize the potential behind this service.. I get well over 4k uniques per day from twitter and yes, i make money from that traffic. This fact alone (in my eyes) renders all anti-twitter arguments useless.

justinsain 07-01-2009 02:06 PM

When the NBA finals were on TV I got a big kick out of seeing people sitting in the first few rows and they would have their heads down playing with their phone instead of watching what was going on around them.

It is a very viable traffic and revenue stream, so if you use it for marketing then I get it. BUT, if you are tweeting the fact that you "are about to eat a 3 egg omelet" or following a celbratard then you should be shot!

you have a good point. there will always be people who hate things that are new or dont want to adjust. just like when myspace started to hit it big, people were against it and said it pulled into your private life to much for others to see.

however, twitter is a good place for business. from what ive heard, its the same as just posting an rss feed all over the place, now people are going to a middle ground. I have a customer that uses twitter almost everyday to update everyone on her products and items that are selling on her website. she has like 400 followers and says she is getting a lot of sales from it.

crazyness

its a good way to get a msg about, building a niche twitter account with 10-20k followers can be very good marketing wise.

Yes, and now myspace fad is over and it's move on to Face Book... Hence the reason for my post. I think the Twitter "fad" is likely going to start going down hill as well.

Then everyone will run off to the next cool thing. While of course twitter will still be around I'm betting it's getting close to peak. The kiddies aren't going to hang around when their moms and dads are using it.

After all it's the teenage kids that make these social sites big..

tammix 07-01-2009 02:31 PM

isnt twitter that yellow canary owned by an ol'granny from WB??

If you posted that you were twittering and twittered that you were posting... would you get caught in an infinite loop?

That's just the Laker LALA fans being cool! Ever notice that they are the only NBA crowd that is in the dark with no lights on them. Jack Nicholson is also the only fan who ever received a technical foul in the whole league.

I think the stupidity of the situation would cause your brain to will a clot and you'd go down like MJ in a free clinic for drug addled children.

AaliyahLove 07-01-2009 03:22 PM

I hope not because I'm getting tons of paying customers for my webcam shows and my website off of Twitter.. it seems to be working for me!:)

teg0 07-01-2009 03:34 PM

I read a nice article about how twitter is gold for marketers, but marketers will kill it.

PornMD 07-01-2009 03:37 PM

Well it's getting into top 20 Alexa rank for good pretty soon - thanks to the recent celeb deaths, notably MJ's death and the confusion surrounding it at first, it hit 14th in daily Alexa rank a few days ago. Only a matter of time before Twitter is right up there with Facebook and Youtube, and only a matter of time before Yahoo drops below those 3 in traffic, leaving those 3 and Google as the dominant sites on the web, probably until Web 3.0 hits whenever/whatever that'll be.

The crazy thing is that a lot of people that use Twitter don't "use" Twitter...they use Tweetdeck and other services to do their tweeting. It may have already been a top 10 site if they had the functionality of those services on Twitter itself - which surprises me that they don't.

I think their struggle will be the same as the struggles of any site like this. Since it is free they may find themselves having trouble monetizing it. Myspace signed a huge deal with Google, but Facebook has been having some issues making money. I'm sure they will figure it out, but the nature of these things is that they seem to go in cycles. Myspace was the hot thing now it is Facebook and Twitter and a few years from now it might be something else. Figuring out how to make money from it before it dies off is the challenge.

That said I have been playing around with twitter and it isn't all bad. You just have to follow the correct people.. I have actually learned some good business stuff and got some good information from it.

Lamis 07-01-2009 03:54 PM

twitter sucks... just wondering why it became so popular..seriously..

anyway.. i also wonder why so many big media companies and TV channels give them FREE EXPOSURE and FREE PROPAGANDA... Same as Facebook.. they never payed for that publicity... just wondering..

many TV channels and programs give them FREE Publicity daily, that other companies have to pay millions for..

I don't even link back to my blog from my Twitter and my traffic rose right after using it. I guess just talking about what I just posted and many breakdowns makes people later visit. :winkwink:

Yeah, being a Magic fan I didn't want to make a big deal out of it but I did notice a lot of people were doing it at the LA games and nobody was doing it at the Orlando games. I attributed it to the Magic fans being more appreciative of being in the finals.

As for Nicholson, in one of the Finals games he got up and cussed a ref half way down the side of the court for his call. I was wondering if they could give him a T and now I know they can :)
