How to start a legal Hollywood Gossip Site?

I remember Perez was sued bc. he was stealing images without consent.

How does someone legally post these pictures? I see now he is giving credit, but what all needs to be done? I own a good celeb domain and always wanted to do this legally.

gwidomains 06-23-2009 11:05 PM

18k/mo in royalty fees.

absolutely serious.

E-mail x17 and ask them about subscriptions to the celeb pics and vids.
It is NOT cheap.

You can try to get away with snagging them...

Court ordered or is Perez paying that fee to use their pics?

Hire some paparazzi. Or bust out the camera and start taking pics.

MetrixApps - Sean 06-24-2009 09:56 PM

good luck with it
its very competitive
its all about who u know who u pay out

FreeHugeMovies 06-24-2009 10:01 PM

Can't you just give credit? LOL

Young 06-24-2009 10:18 PM

If you're providing newsworthy commentary on the pictures then you might be able to get away with skirting copyright laws.....if you're drawing penis's on them you can forget about it.

you can register to see pricing, I think one time use of a single 72dpi image starts around the $50 range

DK 06-25-2009 12:41 AM

ICQ me,
I'll point you were to get legal celeb pics starting around $5 a piece searchable by name.
I use it for my celebrity rag:

Nah, I think x17 can get triple the damages via copyright law -- so they hiked up the rates etc. This was before they were fully on the net, so they've set their "subscription" rates extraordinarily high.

For instance, if you look at omg.yahoo.com it is in partnership with x17

Getting the best photos is an expensive business.

BigRod 06-25-2009 02:29 AM

It is an expensive biz but the search traffic is sick even on a small site.

If you want to do it right hire a couple of photographers and make them employees. You don't want them going rogue when they get you your million dollar shot! You will get a lot of cease orders but all part of the fun.

HorseShit 06-25-2009 06:40 AM

hope you have deep pockets.

Are we talking about starting a new blog with no money; or do you have the money and it will be clearly obvious just by looking at the site?

If you have no money and starting off like any other new blogger, you can take whatever you want. Just link back and you should be fine for the most part. Perez's problem started with him never linking back & when they emailed him, he emailed back very nasty emails. He ruined it for everyone. X17 would let anyone take the tagged pictures. Now if they find you, you have to take it down. Only take it down when you get the official email.

These agencies know they need bloggers to promote their agencies. They let bloggers take their tagged images while they make their money selling images to the tabloids and television. They provide you with pictures while you provide them with traffic and backlinks.

Only a handful of blogs can now afford to pay for pictures: DListed, Hollywood Tuna, Just Jared, and just a couple more. But bloggers never pay full price for pictures when they can finally afford to pay. They get a blogger special. It's still a fortune but it is at a reduced rate if you're a blogger.

I don't even think X17 and Splash News allow even one picture used because of Perez Hilton. If you link back to them, have the link open a new window because you can't even backspace back into your site and your visitors might not come back.

Best bet would be to link back to the blogs that do pay for pictures. This way they get the backlinks while you can use their non-tagged pictures. If the blog says which agency they got it from, link back to the agency as the source and then say via whatever blog you got them from.

The key is to always link back. Forgot to say be careful with taking pictures from People Magazine. The big stories where they paid millions for the pictures, I know bloggers that had their blogs shut down by the host. Blogs at Blogger also had staff go into their blogs and take out the pictures. Blogger staff?! And my friends were never even told by Blogger that they went into their blogs taking out the pictures.

crockett 07-01-2009 10:53 AM

Is there any actual fair use in this kind of thing if you are reporting as news or as satire?

Two killer sources of celeb pics are

1. Mugshots - those are public domain ;)

2. World Entertainment News Network - Google it for their url I'm too new to be trusted ;) - they offer news and pictures that you can offer for a reasonable price

I'm not a dude!

And I've been around celebrity sites for many years to know how it's handled and done.

Perez was usually satire and drawing penises on pictures. But he never linked back to the source and replied back to their emails in a nasty manner.

Most bloggers will take down the pictures when the first email comes. They're scared and actually believe they'll be sued. They're posting a few pictures. Not burning an entire movie.
