Vandals struck

There has been a rash of vandalism in the neighborhood recently. I just went outside and learned that I have took a hit. Water hoses cut into, bar-b-q charcole scattered, plants dumped out of pots, plum tree and fig tree butchered, bulbs broke from movement sensitive flood lights, outdoor funiture scattered all over the yard, garbage dumped all over. Luckily they did not slash the tires on my motor home and car as has happened with some of the neighbors. The amazing thing is that I was awake all night and heard nothing. The dog was inside asleep and was not awakened. I assume it is kids and the worse part is when they are caught they will receive a slap on the wrist. Vandalism is treated all to lightly by the justice system. To me it is one of the most serious crimes there is because it is senseless destruction.

Put up a hidden camera, find out who did it, and go buy a nice wooden baseball bat :)

I've got alarms on everything, a german sherphard out back & video camera's that reset on a 24-hour basis.

We had a vandal on my property back in 96', he also stole a car stereo...it ended up being a construction worker (builder who was working next door during the week), we got him on tape & he spent 2 years in county.

Secure your belongings, install alarms, get some of those little x10 mini camera's & install atleast 3 of them & get a gaurd dog..you won't have to worry about shit.

I find it hard to believe you didnt hear anything.Unless they struck at like 4 in the morning...

The house is secure, but I guess it is time to get some outside security.

I was up all night, but I work out of my dad's old office and after discussing last nights events with my mother she told me that my dad had some what sound proofed the office so as not to disturb her at night, with the TV going.

psyko514 11-30-2002 03:38 PM

that type of vandalism is beyond absurd?
what's the point, unless you have a personal vendetta with the person you're attacking?

Kill them. Set land mines.

Probably just kids raised by couch potatoes who don't give a shit where they are or what they are doing. Way back when I was really REALLY poor, I drove an old VW bus and all the insurance I could afford was liability. One night some kids broke into it and must have spent at least an hour breaking what they could break, and if they couldn't break it they dented or bent it, and if it was too tough for that they scratched it to shit. My car was good transportation one day and totalled the next without even leaving the spot where it was parked. I was already in a pretty deep depression at that time over a bunch of downturns (marriage, job, health, etc.), so I didn't need that. Either the kids assumed (as so many seem to do) that everything is insured so who cares, or else they just enjoyed the thought of bringing some pain and suffering to someone else. Perhaps someone here has some insight into the psychology of behavior like that. I understand why someone jacks off. I don't understand why someone wouldn't feel their day was complete without hurting someone.

asuna 11-30-2002 04:25 PM

The punishment dished out by the Juvenile Justice system is also ridiculous, assuming of course that it is a kid or kids.

Considering what they did to my car (and by extension, me), would that have fallen into a "no real damage" category? I mean for an asshole.

I have tried to convince my mother of that. :)

There is a suburb of Vancouver (Surrey) that is the property break-in capital of North America per capita. It is like over twice as bad as the worst US city. Overall here, we have a huge drug problem and many hardcore addicts do B&E's all day everyday just to support their addiction.

theking 12-13-2002 04:31 AM

I have a since acquired new outside intruder protection. I bought a two year old trained Doberman. Trained as a watch dog. The dog is a silent alarm. It does not bark, only growls and/or attacks. The only alarm I may hear is the yelling of whoever is on the receiving end. Its obedience level is amazing.
