Have you ever been on strike?

Strikes are one of the stories of the day in the UK press. I have never been on strike simply because I never really worked that sort of job. My mom was on strike a number of times when I was growing up though and I remember the whole chaos around it.

Have you ever been on strike and what was it like for you?

I was a scab worker in Detroit during the newspaper strikes in 1995. My buddies and I were bored that summer and went out there to work while everyone was on strike.

I spent just under three months on the picket line back in '96. Not exactly what I'd call fun, but it wasn't bad either. Between cutting back on spending, weekly union picket pay, and a couple of grocery bags a week from the union food bank, I got by.

the only company I've actually worked a real job for was IBM in my early webmastering days, and there wasnt much to complain about so no need to strike :)
Yet, I'm pro strikers; for the most part workers get the short end of the stick while big companies get fat off the plusvalue and strikes are the way to correct that, at least temporarily.

Came close during my years working at the hospital. Had a couple of near misses, a few strike votes in 80+% for.... but management (ie: the government) always settled with us at the last minute.

Interestingly enough, only a year after I retired my union went out on strike, and was out for something like 4 months. Glad I missed all that.

I used to work for the local phone company here in California, then called Pacific Bell. We were getting close to a strike and it was annoying. I wasn't sure which way I would go. On one hand, I was making good money and a week of not working would kill me. On the other hand, I wanted to support the union for ensuring I was getting that fat pay check.

Luckily we didn't go on strike.
